High military court will hear case of Marine punished for displaying Bible verse

The highest U.S. military court will hear the case of a Marine who was punished for refusing to remove a Bible verse from her workstation.

In May, 2013 then-Lance Cpl. Monifa Sterling kept a Bible verse on her computer in three places. The verses read "No weapon formed against me shall prosper," a modification of the Isaiah 54:17, according to the Catholic News Agency.

Ms. Sterling's staff sergeant demanded she remove the verse, but Ms. Sterling refused, saying she had the right to express her religious freedom.

The next day Ms. Sterling arrived to find the verses had been ripped down from her station. She put them up again. The cycle repeated until Ms. Sterling was court-martialed on Feb. 1, 2014.

She was convicted of disrespecting a superior commissioned officer, failing to go to an appointed place of duty, and disobeying a lawful order on four separate occasions, The Daily Caller reported.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals also sided against Ms. Sterling, saying significant damage could be caused by forcing military employees to be exposed to a religious quotation, CNA reported.

“...significant damage could be caused by forcing military employees to be exposed to a religious quotation.”

And just how pray tell?

I understand her point of view. However she is in the military and the verse was posted on military equipment and she was given an order to remove it. Perhaps if it was written in Aramaic script nobody would have said anything.

I think she will lose.

Would you support the right of a Satan Worshipper to have a verse on their computer station that read “Satan is King” ?

Or How about a Muslim that had one from the Koran that commanded them to kill Jews and Christians?

I support her, but she clearly was wrong as far as not obeying the order. However, taking them down and going up the chain of command may have been a better tactic. Even going to EO might have been a better conclusion for her. At least in the “older” military that I retired from. Today, not sure. But might have been worth a try.

Yes...as a matter of fact...it’s on THEIR station...not the whole location...plus a muzzie who did that would be watched

FDR asking folks to go to church and pray on June 6, 1944 would be met with a stiff rebuke today, no doubt.

If she had written, “there is no god but Allah and Muhammed is the messenger of Allah,” nothing would have happened to her.

She has had trouble finding a good job because of the blemish on her military record.

Come on America...someone hire her. Stat.

The one who should be on trial, IMHO, if there was to be one, is her CO.

This CO was clearly reaching for a reason for the order to remove the verse. I've seen other military lower level employees with photos on their computers, sports team logos etc. so this particular CO dislikes the bible and all things biblical (read all things related to God) and orders the takedown.

Pretty much of a power struggle and the CO has every right to order the take down but clearly has a problem with the "ultimate authority of God."

She was wrong. Military cohesion is too critical to the mission. The workplace is no place for pushing politics or religion. A shared workstation, in particular, is no place for posting anything personal - it is SHARED.

When I was in the military (25 years), I made it clear the work place was for “work” - not for discussing who you slept with last night, hope to sleep with tomorrow, politics, religion or anything else that would distract from “work”.

Once you left the work space, you could discuss anything you wanted. But while on duty - work. If they didn’t have enough to keep them busy, I’d arrange it so they did.
