Trump and His Fans Are Stuck Inside a Feedback Loop
The National Review ^ | November 29, 2015 | Charles C. W. Cooke

Posted on 11/30/2015 12:09:57 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

On Meet the Press this morning, Donald Trump insisted that:

he was "100 percent right" when he said he saw thousands of Muslims in Jersey City, New Jersey, cheering the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, even though fact-checkers have debunked his assertion.

In a phone interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," Trump said he has heard from "hundreds of people that agree" that there were televised Muslim celebrations of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, which he used as evidence to show his remarks were true.

"I saw it. So many people saw it," said Trump, who, in the race for the November 2016 election, has been among the most vocal of the Republican candidates in expressing skepticism about Muslims in the United States. "So, why would I take it back? I'm not going to take it back."

When NBC anchor Chuck Todd suggested the people Trump heard from are supporters and might want to agree with him, Trump interrupted to note the "huge Muslim population" New Jersey has. >

"Why wouldn't it have taken place?" he said of a celebration there. "I've had hundreds of people call in and tweet in on Twitter, saying that they saw it and I was 100 percent right."

This affair serves as the perfect illustration of the ugly manner in which the Trump phenomenon now works. That there is no evidence of "thousands" of American Muslims cheering 9/11 from New Jersey is, frankly, immaterial. Why? Well, because Trump is playing a character on TV, and his script includes no room for error. By the rules he has set out for himself, whatever Trump says he is, he must be. As such, he can't possibly have misremembered what happened after 9/11 - as might any human being - because he has the World's Greatest Memory, and the guy with the World's Greatest Memory doesn't misremember.

This rule applies consistently. If Trump says he's a conservative - despite holding positions that usually make conservatives shriek - then he's a conservative. If that requires redefining conservatism, so be it. If he says he wasn't mocking a journalist whom he was quite obviously mocking, then he wasn't mocking that journalist. If that requires his admirers to suspend disbelief beyond all possible limits, then so be it. And if he says that he saw something of which there really is no evidence, then he must have seen it. Worse still: If you like him, then you must have seen it too.

In this late stage, Trump's whole campaign has become a ghastly feedback loop from which there is no hope of escape. Typically, we do not accept "why wouldn't it have happened?" as much of an argument for anything. Customarily, we would privilege the ancient principle of ei incumbit probatio qui dicit, non qui negat (the burden of proof is on the one who declares, not on one who denies) above an appeal to the mob. Not here, though. There's a SuperTrump to prop up. If 2+2 has to equal 5 to annoy Chuck Todd or to stick one in the eye of the politically correct, then 2+2 is 5.

For me, it’s the uniparty media trying their gottcha game on Trump to sink him. They don’t play gottcha on Jeb or Hillary. There is plenty to nail these two in a gottcha spirit, but reporters won’t touch these preferred candidates until the general election and then they will only attack the Republican. They only do this to conservatives or people outside the uniparty establishment in the primary so that a uniparty candidate can win the Republican primary. He or She will be easier for Hillary to beat because the Republican will grovel - over and over again.

So, unless it is something extremely serious to me (like Trump has a criminal record or did something horrific and it is proven without a doubt), I don’t care and I don’t want Trump doing what conservatives often do - grovel and apologize constantly trying to appease these badgering uniparty freaks and losing the races.

Their two big gottcha numbers at the moment are: Trump made fun of a handicapped slimy reporter trying to deny a story about Muslim celebrating 911. I don’t like making fun of people’s handicaps but the jouro-list was lying and trying to smear Trump so he can...I won’t say it because I am trying to be more Christian when I write here.

The other sensational issue is the uniparty media claim that Trump did not see Muslims celebrating on 911 because it did not happen. Would the media lie, in the spirit of political correctness, to hide the fact that some Muslims were openly celebrating in Jersey on 911? Yes, they would do that. Would Trump lie about having seen coverage of this event? Why would he do that? Is it believable that Muslim celebrated in New Jersey like they did all over the world? Yes, Trump’s assertion makes sense and I think he probably saw what he said he saw.

The media’s “clean up” of politically incorrect stories are often cleansed after the fact. We have all seen this. Politically incorrect facts and whole stories and especially the in the history of live broadcasts always disappear. Journalism has progressed to be a totally dishonest profession. They are all unelected uniparty politicians now...on the far left. They are for Hillary so they want Jeb or Rubio to run against her.

The problem is that Trump is so far inside the RAT/Media/GOPe OODA Loop that they cannot nail him.

Go Trump!

It has been 14 years since the towers fell but I distinctly remember an incident about muslims not only celebrating but having a camera set up and filming it as well from the jersey side. And when I say set up, I mean before the first plane hit.

I trip over negative articles about both Jeb and Hillary - they are cutting, critical, devastating and everywhere.

So, unless it is something extremely serious to me (like Trump has a criminal record or did something horrific and it is proven without a doubt), I don't care and I don't want Trump doing what conservatives often do - grovel and apologize constantly trying to appease these badgering uniparty freaks and losing the races.

It's good to understand your threshold of tolerance for Trump's biography/campaign.

Their two big gottcha numbers at the moment are: Trump made fun of a handicapped slimy reporter trying to deny a story about Muslim celebrating 911. I don't like making fun of people's handicaps but the jouro-list was lying and trying to smear Trump so he can.....I won't say it because I am trying to be more Christian when I write here.

Would you wear such rose colored glasses if someone other than Trump had delivered his comments about a well known (conservative} handicapped reporter that way?

The other sensational issue is the uniparty media claim that Trump did not see Muslims celebrating on 911 because it did not happen. Would the media lie, in the spirit of political correctness, to hide the fact that some Muslims were openly celebrating in Jersey on 911? Yes, they would do that. Would Trump lie about having seen coverage of this event? Why would he do that? Is it believable that Muslim celebrated in New Jersey like they did all over the world? Yes, Trump's assertion makes sense and I think he probably saw what he said he saw.

Hasn't Trump set himself up for criticism because of his bombast and contradictory positions?

The media's "clean up" of politically incorrect stories are often cleansed after the fact.

I hope that honesty and open debate will thrive on FR.

My eyes are barely open and already we start with the Trump bashing.

This guy, Cooke is an imbecile. He hasn’t written a fair article on Trump from the beginning.

Here’s my take, there is practically nothing Trump can do to lose my vote. He’s not a stupid man. He would never run as a third party.

Being the negotiator he is, with the people he has, I can’t see the nomination being stolen from him. He is smarter than the Karl Roves out there, and the idiot RINOs having their 1000$ Martini lunches in Beverly Hills where they talk about supporting Hillary.

HERE IS SOMETHING FOR YOU TO THINK ABOUT AN ANSWER. AND THIS IS THE BOTTOM LINE FOR ME AS IT APPLIES TO THE TRUMP BASHERS ON THIS FORUM.

IF TRUMP WINS THE NOMINATIION, AND IT LOOKS LIKE HE WILL, WHAT WILL YOU DO?

1. Hold your nose and vote for Trump.
2. Campaign enthusiastically for him as you would for the republican nominee in general.
3. Not vote.
4. Vote for Hillary.

ENOUGH WITH THE DAILY MORNING TRUMP BASHING. ANSWER THE ABOVE QUESTION.

I don't accept your premise and I will not "sign" a loyal oath to Trump.

And asking for answers is now bashing Trump?

Your comments underscore why I asked questions in Comment #1 and posted this thread.

You want me to say that "I LOVE Big Brother?"

I don't.

Dear Charles:

So you are proclaiming Trump supporters live in a parallel universe.

Which is more believable . . . Those who say they witnessed such an event or you proclaiming that it was not possible nor probable that Muslims in New Jersey was celebrating?

lol i’m starting on twitter to follow trump. as it has his posts like email. and his exact words like about the ministers on monday. it is not an endorsement meeting like cnn put out. he had a meeting before with the Pentecostals and had hands laid on his face in prayer. i think the guy is real.

I hadn't heard about that; is this what you're commenting on?

"JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has cancelled a press conference in which his campaign said he would be endorsed by as many as 100 black evangelical religious leaders. Many of those invited to the event say they had no intention of endorsing the billionaire businessman and former reality television star.

"It's a miscommunication," said Darrell Scott, the senior pastor of New Spirit Revival Center in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, who has helped to arrange meetings between Trump and black pastors in recent months. Trump's campaign "thought it was going to be a press conference for an endorsement when it wasn't," Scott said Sunday in an interview.........Trump scraps endorsement event after black pastors object
