Physicians Urged To Ask Patients About Gun Ownership During Office Health Histories

A pediatric emergency medicine physician is urging doctors to join the effort for gun control by asking about gun ownership while performing health histories on their patients.

A panel titled “The Tipping Point: Activating a Public Health Movement to Address Gun Violence” was featured at the American Public Health Association (APHA)’s 2015 annual meeting in Chicago earlier in November. The panel called for a view of gun violence as a public health emergency situation.

Suggest said physicians NOT ask about things not relevant to your condition/illness/disease. Remember, not all doctors finished at the top of the class.

I'm fairly confident that most physicians and physician-extenders don't have the time to read all the questions on the EMR charts, never mind do anything except check most or all of the boxes "no". A day doesn't go by where I don't read through a chart where the patient's main problem is denied and contradicted elsewhere in the record. (Reading the Obama-mandated electronic medical charts carefully will likely turn into a gold mine for malpractice lawyers.)

There are 3 possible answers on the federal form (actually I don’t know, but I’m guessing).
1) No, I do not own any guns
2) Yes, but I keep them safely locked up
3) None of your DAMN BUSINESS

There is another answer I used.. N/A
I walked into an Urgent Care clinic and had to fill out 8 to 10 forms in the waiting room. Most forms asked about me, my health, my medical history and insurance. All of those forms were reliant so I answered them.
There was another 2 page form that asked non medical questions. On this form it asked if I own guns or kept guns in my house. Other questions asked if I had a swimming pool, and other questions about my house. All of the questions on this form was answered with a "N/A", all of them.

You didn't ask me if I own a pool or a bucket. Why not?

Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death (second only to motor vehicle accidents) for kids aged 1-14 a>.

Answer the question with a question. How many lawsuits have been filed against you?

***“One in five deaths in young people ages 15 to 29 are from firearms — a stunning number,” said Fleegler, as Medscape reports. “If these were deaths due to cancer, we would find this outrageous.”***

Ok. I stopped right there. First of all, this was recommended by Pediatricians. What pediatricians do you know seeing pts over18? As a nurse I can tell you none, so, most of that age group doesn’t even pertain to them. Second, 1/5? Maybe in black neighborhoods! For most of that age group the #1 cause of death is car accidents. He’s says we would be outraged if that many kids were dying from cancer, where’s the outrage towards automobile manufacturers?

Young parents, don’t you dare answer this question except to say none of your business and then find another pediatrician.

Sounds good. But at the time I was trying to adopt my granddaugher (the adoption has since been finalized thank God). As it was a hostile scenario terminating the rights of her parents, I did not dare do anything controversial to give the court/social workers/etc a reason to oppose

Well I can understand your reluctance to be confrontational.

I think my wife would like to the same thing with our daughter. She is unmarried and about to have her second child by her second "baby daddy".

I however am reluctant to start parenting again at my age. I am approaching retirement and having children in school when in my seventies is not an appealing mental picture.

There’s always YELP where you can provide feedback on doctors who cross the limits of professional conduct. Yelp reviews DO affect their practice and they DO care about it.

Remind your practitioner that you WILL post a review if you don’t like her conduct.

Now that medicine has become politicized, I believe that it’s every patriot’s duty to lie to their physician.

I go to a doctor for medical care not for liberal elite lectures.

Maybe we should question liberal elites about the problems of mass illegal immigration BEFORE we provide services to them too... And our small businesses? Maybe we can do without elites as customers...

DO NOT tell them anything about whether you own guns or not- our state did this awhile back, and then dropped it later-

The reason they are doing this is not to ‘protect patients from committing suicide’ it is to get a national registry of all those who own guns, and also it’s beign done to go on record of anyone who ever took an antidepressant or antipsychotic drug- even if it’s been years- you WILL be o na watch list if you answer yes to owning a gun

Any doctor who asks is going to get an answer he definitely won’t like. End the dictatorship. Dismantle the police state. Impeach and Repatriate Obama to his own country.

let’s assume there are 150 million 15-29 year olds In the US- 1 in 5 would mean

That means 30 million people are dying from guns per year?

It is part of the standard questions in many electronic medical health records systems now.

Very Hitleresque. I’d just tell them that I don’t own any guns and let it go at that. Everybody is happy. They asked the question and I answered it. Then we can get down to the non-political reason why I was there in the first place.

I wouldn't be happy. I don't appreciate anyone prying into my business. The doctor is getting paid to provide medical care, not to interrogate me. I would tell the doctor I have no intention of discussing firearms I may or may not have. Either he lets it go or I leave. I don't try and placate liberals and I think it's a bad strategy.
