LAMONI, Iowa — U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz on Saturday night condemned the fatal shooting of three people at a Planned Parenthood location in Colorado while urging caution regarding the suspect’s motives.

“We don’t know ... what those motives were, but whatever they were, it’s unacceptable, and it’s horrific and wrong,” the Republican presidential hopeful told reporters here before a town hall.

Cruz is among the first — if not the first — GOP candidate to denounce the shooting, which happened Friday in Colorado Springs and left a police officer and two civilians dead. A suspect, Robert Dear, has been taken into custody.

"I have spent much of my adult life working in law enforcement, working against murderers and those who commit violent crime, and that one officer lost his life is particularly tragic," Cruz said.

Cruz appeared to be the first GOP candidate to directly address the shooting Saturday morning, when he tweeted that he was "Praying for the loved ones of those killed, those injured & first responders who bravely got the situation under control in Colorado Springs."

Cruz has been perhaps the harshest critic of Planned Parenthood in the GOP field, especially after the release of undercover videos showing officials with the group discussing business practices. Cruz has referred to the organization as an "ongoing criminal enterprise," and he regularly promises to initiate a federal investigation into the group as one of his first acts in office if elected president.

Well that was easy... denouncing a shooting that is... what did the media expect him to do?

Why even open your mouth about this?

Somebody needs to tell Cruz that eyewitness accounts say this appears to be a botched bank robbery, with the perp barricading himself in a nearby pp facility to evade law enforcement.

I think that just like with the CMP videos accusation of editing, the major thread in news reporting will be the narrative that the shooter was anti-choice and wanted to make a political statement.

Because if you have this on tape...

Reporter: Senator Cruz, what do you say about someone who shot up a Planned Parenthood office after you have been so critical of the organization?

Sen. Cruz: No comment at this time.

...you lose a lot of potential support and give a ready made television ad to your opponent.

Better to prepare a statement and don’t allow yourself to be caught off guard.

Why not...a cop was killed and 2 civilians...sheesh. Whatever the motive is...innocent people died. What if this happened to a member of your family?

“Why even open your mouth about this?”

He must believe that people will think he is “for” those murders if he doesn’t condemn them. Strange.

While no one in their right mind would condone it, it does seem ironic how freaked out these Planned Murderhood types become when they are threatened with what they do to the most vulnerable among us.

Open you mouth when you know something, not until.

It is suspected this guy robbed a bank first. Stating that was his original motive, and PP only happened to be a place of refuge would have been critically important.

Saying something earlier without that will leave the impression the motive was the planned parenthood. And once that is ensconced, you’ll never get that opportunity back.

People are looking for your first comment, not your second or third.

Next, don’t ever elevate an officer over the two others. Three deaths... period.

Didn’t see him comment, so some of this may not be reported factually. If so, I would error on the side of Curz here.

Proving the report is flawed. Otherwise...

I see nowhere where Sen. Cruz mentions Planned Barrenhood as more than a place. In that the murderer took shelter in their location for most of the standoff, that is factually accurate. He explicitly said “no matter the motive,” murder is wrong. Got a problem with that? Frankly, he spent more time recognizing the bravery of first responders, and mourning the loss of the police officer.

As usual, Sen. Cruz responds with dignity, saying the precisely correct thing.

The perp was a tranny bank robber who deliberately hid in the Planned Parenthood in order to draw media attention away from itself, probably a paid DNC operative but certainly a pro-choicer and a Leftist. It doesn’t sound like any abortionists were killed as collateral, but if they were, good riddance. Nobody else deserved to die.

I generally like Cruz, but saying that “the motives are unclear” is at least partially incorrect. We are 100% certain the murderer was a Leftist.

He said whatever the motive, it was wrong. If bank robbery is an acceptable motive to you, I guess you and I must think differently.

He didn't explicitly provide a reason why they man was there.

He should have kept his yap shut. This would have been appropriate, "I am particularly interested in this loss of life. When I have more facts at hand I will have comments to make. At this time I do not have enough information to address the issue. I will have no further comment at this time."

You actually buy into this comment, "I have spent much of my adult life working in law enforcement, working against murderers and those who commit violent crime, and that one officer lost his life is particularly tragic," Cruz said.

The loss of the other two people isn't as tragic?

That was just thoughtless. He was trying to be supportive of law enforcement but that isn't how you do that. This was not the quick decisive comment that was called for. Curz should have known better.

It’s like putting it on the record. Obama often forgets to condemn black and Islamic violence and it later comes up. The left will attack everything you say and everything you don’t say. It is partly preemptive.
