In April 2014, I suddenly realized that when you buy gasoline, the receipt does not list all the different taxes you have to pay.
So I emailed the Illinois Policy Institute (https://www.illinoispolicy.org) and asked them to make up a facsimile of a gas receipt.
Here's what they came up with, and they featured it in a story on their website.
Turns out a gallon of gas in Chicago has eight taxes on it. In Park Ridge adds two cents more. (I think today they are higher.)
I went to a neighborhood gas station – the owner was a nice guy. I asked him if people get angry with him when gasoline goes up in price.
He said of course they do. I said, "Why don't you put a sign in your window, listing all the taxes they customers are paying on a gallon of gas?"
He said, "That's illegal in Illinois. I would get fined and could lose my gas station!"

The bureaucrats won’t let the vendors print the truth because they’d then be wondering if they’d get home safely at night.
Because then the sheeple would see them...
Illegal? I’d like to see the written law on that. I think that’s BS.
Bookmarked.
(But he forgot the Social Security taxes, fed and state and local income taxes, the regional sales taxes (though sometimes those are not on gasoline itself), and the rest.
Right now, 47% of “my” income is stolen by taxes.
And, it seems no matter the price of gas, the taxes remain the same.
The government deliberately and intentionally made these taxes hidden, so the consumer would blame the evil oil companies for high prices.
Forbidding gas stations to post the taxes per gallon is irresponsible and unconstitutional. Passing a law such as that does make the law valid.
Not a problem, I can easily not buy gasoline in Ill. while traversing the place. (Don’t and haven’t for years)
What the heck is a “Home Rule Sales Tax”?
Gorush,
Where & when was that pic taken?
How many taxes are added prior to the retail level on the suppliers, refiners, drillers, and explorers?
Someone has to pay for the 47% who don't work.
It was from a series of old historical photos...I can’t remember where it was taken but it was from 1955.
how dare he take 4 cents a gallon profit.
You oughtta see the taxes on an $84 carton of Lucky Strikes. Good thing I write it all off as a medical expense. Helps me cope when reading the daily news in the 0bama administration.
They do it here ,it makes you Cry .You don’t want to Cry every fill-up
RE: What the heck is a âHome Rule Sales Taxâ?
FROM THIS ARTICLE:
EXCERPT:
Home rule is the ability of a Municipal government to facilitate greater local control over the government decision making process.
Home rule charters, or local constitutions that establish such status, are voted on by the residents...
.....
The levying of a home rule sales tax is a means to generate village
income. All cities that have a population over 25,000; have a home rule
option in Illinois, municipalities however are optional.
That’s not profit.
That’s the business cut.
His employment taxes, rent, and general overhead (power, water, garbage, etc) all still need to be paid from his meager portion.
