Some in military suspended for deadly Afghan hospital attack

American soldiers and airmen who killed and wounded dozens of civilians in a strike on an Afghanistan hospital violated the rules of engagement and have been suspended as they await disciplinary action, U.S. military officials said Wednesday.

Briefing reporters on the results of two investigations, Gen. John Campbell, the U.S. commander in Afghanistan, described an egregious series of human and technical failures that led a U.S. warplane to mistakenly destroy a medical charity's hospital in northern Afghanistan last month. But Campbell and other officials would not say how many people had been removed from their jobs nor whether those high up the chain of command will be subject to discipline.

Officials said the crew of an AC-130 gunship had been dispatched to hit a Taliban command center in a different building, 450 yards away. However, hampered by problems with their targeting sensors, the crew relied on a physical description that led them to begin firing at a hospital run by the Doctors Without Borders medical charity, even though they saw no hostile activity there

As long as the punishment is equal to the punishment of those in the VA administration. Transfer with paid relocation. No loss of rank. Seriously, these guys are scapegoats.

“Under U.S. rules of engagement, no hospital or similar facility is a valid target.”

Nice to know if you are the enemy that you can conduct attacks and shoot Americans and do so without fear because if you are in a hospital, it is a “safe zone” for you and the Americans can’t hit back.

International Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) permits you to attack a hospital if attacks are coming from there because the enemy is revoking the protected status of the facility.

If they got bad intel, ?? How is it their fault. Maybe I should read the story. Perhaps it is the intel people who are in trouble.

Suspended? I've never heard of that in a military context.

... an egregious series of human and technical failures...

And one human failure. What ever happened to the buck stops here?

Notice how no one on the left is blaming 0 for this? if it had been under a Republican president, it would be 24/7 obsession.

It is always the US military who is at fault with this Muslim in the WH! Even after the Afghanistan President stated his military commanders requested US support air craft to hit the hospital because the Taliban was using the hospital for a command center!

This has Obama’s prints all over it. How long before Obama pays the socialist Doctors without Borders with our tax dollars for damages, five four, three, two, one . . . wait for it!!!!!!!!!

Some private cleaning the latrines will be found as being responsible for the bombing of the hospital.

Despite the fact that jihadis regularly use hospitals and moscques both as operations centres and weapons stockpile areas we are not allowed to target them for some reason...

Plus, Doctors without Borders unwittingly prolongs suffering by going into war zones and giving aid to enemy fighters. Boo F____ing Hoo. Go into a war zone and treat the enemy, chances are you’ll get hurt.

Why not just arrest their commander sitting in the White HOuse?

He is as culpable as anyone else in the military.

Time to set things right.
