EU flags disappear from Polish government press briefings

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -- Poland's new prime minister has broken with the practice of pro-European predecessors and has removed the EU flag from her weekly news conference.

Beata Szydlo appeared Tuesday to brief reporters after the first working meeting with her Cabinet since the conservative Law and Justice party took power last week, and stood in front of Polish flags only.

Asked about the change, Szydlo said that in these difficult times she is grateful that Poland belongs to NATO and the EU, but that government press briefings devoted to national matters will from now on take place "against the background of the most beautiful white-and-red flags."

The blue EU flag still hangs at the entrance to her chancellery and in Parliament.

Looks like Poland might want to leave the EU

Poland can’t actually leave the EU. Its economy is dependent on EU trade and investment and millions of Poles living and working in EU member states would be up a creek if Poland lost freedom of labor rights. It can, of course, do whatever it wants with its own letterhead.

The EU is having a tough time keeping it together.

After the ISIS migration, the attacks in Paris and now possible World War with Russia.... Poland wants out.

That makes no sense. Poland isn't trying to get out of NATO so it will still be tied militarily in the event of a war with Russia, and to the extent that it has broken with the rest of Europe it's because Poland has pushed for a tougher line on Russia.

Second, if Poland left the EU its economy would collapse. I don't think anybody could possibly rebut that. The only possible solution would be if the Euros agreed to allow Poland to have all the benefits of EU membership (trade, investment, freedom of labor and capital) without having to actually be members. I don't see that happening.

The Euro was already falling apart. This is why it was so important for them to get Ukraine and to keep Greece from leaving.

ISIS attacking in Europe will probably accelerate the fall of the Euro, and probably be the “EXCUSE” of the reason of the collapse of the Euro.

The truth is the Euro was already a finished, and the EU leaders were looking for an excuse other than complete mismanagement. Terrorism from ISIS is the perfect Scapegoat. Hence, why they are no longer securing their borders.

Bilateral agreements, the old fashioned way, could replace everything they desire from the EU.

All over the world people are fed up with their lying liberal elites.

This is more than a trend - it’s the new reality.

Poland was the first to 'leave' the USSR years ago. They had what it took back then, they have what it takes today...

Good. The idea of the “United States of Europe” was stupid from the start. It was to eliminate the nations of Europe, and melt them into one country.

The purpose was to take money from producers and give it to slackers.

It was and is a complete failure.

Bullshit! If Poland left the EU, she wouldn't be bound by lots of the EU limitations that only The Monty Python Flying Circus would have been proud of, the limitations that stifle or actually murder the Polish economy, eg. the coal industry. It's also about the absurd regulations that allow huge financial drainage from the Polish banks. Oh it would be a lot to say.

Briefly, the very leaving the EU would give much more profits than all the rest put together.

We, the Polish people can stand many insults, rebukes, etc. However, when A. Merkel tries to teach us like a naughty kid and tell us what to do and intimidates us in case we won't do, IT IS MORE THAN WE CAN STAND.

Germany actually destroys the EU completely.

I could never understand why Poland wanted to be dictated to by Germany who controls the EU.

Germany and Poland have never had good relations even in the best of times.

You’re right. Outside of the EU, Poland would be able to mine all the coal it wants... and sell nothing to anybody. Access to trade, capital and labor markets is kind of a big deal. Particularly for Poland.

LOL. We don’t need to sell it to anybody. It’s only for our own purposes, just for the energetic independence if you know what I mean. Anyway,...

You don't seem to know a whole lot about economics.

Poland has an official unemployment rate of just under 10%. But a huge part of why the unemployment rate is so "low" is because Poland has been able to export surplus population elsewhere in Europe under EU freedom of labor rules. If 2 million Polish citizens have to come back home because they lose work permits, what do you think that would do to Poland's economy? Easy: it would collapse.

Second, you seem to think Poland doesn't need to export anything to anybody. Except Poland's economy would collapse if it can't export agricultural products, automotive products, pharmaceuticals, etc. Poland's economy is hugely dependent on foreign trade, and the vast majority of Poland's trade is with the European Union.

So yeah, they could quit the EU and the country would collapse. But hey, coal!
