Northern Illinois University removes Bibles from campus hotel after complaint

Guests seeking a Bible at Northern Illinois University's campus hotel now must call the front desk after a secular group complained that the sacred scripture had no place in the nightstand.

Annie Laurie Gaylor, co-president of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, discovered a Bible in a drawer last month during a stay on the DeKalb campus where she had been invited to speak by the Secular Student Alliance. Upon her return home, the foundation's lawyer wrote a letter to the Holmes Student Center director requesting the books be removed.

"It sends a message of endorsement — 'We think it's so important you can't possibly go to sleep at night without your Christian Bible in your bedside table'," Gaylor said. "It's proselytizing in the privacy of a room you probably paid a lot of money for. It's bad manners."

Brad Hoey, a university spokesman, said the student center removed the Bibles immediately, even though they had been in the rooms for a number of years.

"We're very conscious of the separation of church and state," Hoey said. "We also embrace our diverse and inclusive culture. Those who wish to have access to the Bibles can have access to them on the premises."

The ubiquitous Bibles in bedside tables come from Gideons International, an evangelical group founded more than a century ago by two men who accidentally shared a hotel room and set out to spread the Gospel in hotels across the U.S.

For decades, Gaylor said, the Freedom From Religion Foundation has taken aim at the Bibles, especially in public accommodations such as state university hotels and park lodges. Some members when they travel carry stickers to slap on the covers of hotel room Bibles — sarcastic warnings that literal belief in the book could endanger the reader's health and life.

Don't want to look at a Bible? Leave it in the nightstand.

“”We’re very conscious of the separation of church and state,” Hoey said.”

What does a college hotel have to do with either?

“We also embrace our diverse and inclusive culture”

Inclusive....by removing the bibles from the rooms.

Liberal logic is full of contradictions and nonsense such as you noted. Its hard to make sense of it. Separation of church and state has nothing to do with Bibles in a hotel room, but these atheistic types say it anyway, and are not called out by the media when they go on TV to explain themselves.

Likewise the contradiction of diversity and inclusiveness achieved by banning the Bible is never explained. It is just assumed to he true by the airhead media who interview these liberal atheists.

So the sight of a bible causes pain and distress to atheists?? Sounds like a good reason to carry one at all times.

Sounds like an even better reason to make one into an object for concealing a full-size handgun and some spare mags.

That way your bible can offend them, but you know that it isn’t really a bible and its actually an EVIL GUN!!

Glue a Confederate flag to it and really freak them out and if they get violent...well, remember that its got a gun inside.

Try that with a Koran.

The absence of a Bible is prima facie evidence of support of Atheist religion.

Do not open that empty drawer! You will be converted.

Thus says Rocky Racoon.

Rather than removing all the Bibles, perhaps the campus hotel could offer a special “freedom from religion suite”. Those sorts could feel all important and special when they call for reservations and request it.

***sarcastic warnings that literal belief in the book could endanger the reader’s health and life.***

THAT BOOK is so terrifying that Antiochus IV Epiphanes sent his armies to destroy the Hebrew scriptures, THAT BOOK
.
The Caesars released the legions of ROME against THAT BOOK.

The moslems tried to destroy THAT BOOK and force a fake book (Koran) on the people which was rejected.

When the people learned to read and the printing press was invented, certain kings and potentates again tried to suppress common language versions of THAT BOOK!

The atheists have vented their spleens and burned THAT BOOK for years!
Ever wonder what terrifies the world about THAT BOOK?

"Upon her return home, the foundation's lawyer wrote a letter to the Holmes Student Center director requesting the books be removed."

If the sight of a Bible got you in that much of a tizzy, perhaps you should have simply requested that the hotel staff remove the Bible from YOUR room during YOUR stay.

Some members when they travel carry stickers to slap on the covers of hotel room Bibles...

Nothing like the destruction of someone else's property. A shameless admission that would ideally result in prosecution (but won't).
