Madison was a Jefferson protégé so if Carson’s supporters want to try and spin it that way they’re welcome to try. But it’s more likely Dr. Carson confuses the Constitution with the Declaration of Independence. If you asked twenty people on the street about Jefferson and the Constitution you’d probably find only one or two who know that Thomas was the American ambassador in Paris at the time and had nothing at all to do with the Constitution, but we don’t pick presidents off the street. Jefferson almost certainly would have wanted to stick with slightly modifying the Articles of Confederation. This does raise a question about what else Carson doesn’t know about the Constitution or American history. We already know he’s no expert on Egypt.

About 50 wealthy, political savvy dudes wrote the constitution. There is an awesome summary of their proceedings called "54 Men and the Constitution". (I think that's the right number).

It even predicted the dilemma that would occur when there are more takers (47%) than givers. You can read it at google books. It's worth the read.

It also mentions that there is no check on the Supreme Court.

Jefferson was in France at the time. Madison and others certainly knew his views and I’m sure corresponded but Carson is wrong.

I bought the book in 1988 for about $2 in a used book store. Best book you could probably read for early thoughts by our forefathers.

Carson is probably confused about Jefferson’s role in the writing of the Declaration of Independence in which he played a major role versus the drafting of the Constitution where he was absent. As others have pointed out, Jefferson was in France at the time the Constitution was being written. Madison, Hamilton, and Jay were important figures in the development of the Constitution. So was George Washington and several others including John Rutledge, James Wilson, Charles Pinkney, Gouverneur Morris (chief draftsman of the final document), Edmund Randolph, and George Mason. The Constitution was the product of many minds.

As to Jefferson, it is interesting to consider what he considered his greatest accomplishments. He wrote the epitaph on his tombstone which states:
Here was buried
Thomas Jefferson
Author of the Declaration of American Independence
of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom
& Father of the University of Virginia

It is noteworthy he did not consider serving as President of the United State as significant.

>> Next week Carson will talk about Neil Armstrong winning the Tour of France <<

Probably Carson is too young to have listened on the radio to the most important Armstrong of all, Jack Armstrong, All-Anmerican Boy.

>> this isn't that big a deal <<

Correct. In and of itself, it's not so important.

But when you add up all the minor mis-steps that the good
doctor has made, they begin to have considerable weight.

Moreover, if these errors continue, they probably
will be fatal sooner rather than later. Sorta
like a death by a thousand cuts.

>> We know Obama is at best, of average intelligence <<

I think that's very naive wishful thinking on your part. And it can be dangerous. We should never underestimate the enemy. The man is a genius, although certainly he is one who might best be described as an evil genius.

Apparently, Obama’s peers at the University of Chicago Law School don’t share your opinion. They are the only people in academia Obama has been unable to silence or otherwise control. Your calling Obama a genius is more frightening than Obama himself

Aww, come on...

He simply mixed up the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.

This is potato/potatoe gotcha all over again.

Anyone remember Algore and Clinton at Monticello, and there were busts of Jefferson, Franklin, Washington, etc.. and Algore looks up and asks the guide:

“So who are all these people?”

Not so sure. Jefferson was in correspondence with Madison and no friend of Mason. We have no way of knowing what Jefferson would have done if he had been a delegate to the Convention. He was a pretty slippery guy who loved power and a Virginian. And recall that Madison’s Virginia Plan put a great deal of power in the hands of the Central government.
