Shocker: Avis Car Rental Bars Israeli Executive from Renting
Observer News ^ | November 22, 2015 | Ken Kurson

On Saturday evening, Dov Bergwerk arrived at the Avis branch on West 76th Street and Broadway. Accompanied by his wife Ruth, the Bergwerks were planning to join friends for dinner in Westchester. Mr. Bergwerk, a senior vice president and general corporate counsel at the Israeli pharmaceutical giant Teva, got out his driver's license, reservation number and "Wizard" loyalty card - he's rented from Avis dozens of times before - and anticipated the usual smooth transition into a nondescript mid-sized sedan.

That's when the trouble started.

machogirl, in case you can’t access Facebook, here is what AVIS posted:

On Friday, a customer seeking to rent a car from Avis Car Rental was not allowed to do so because he failed to provide the required documentation. Visitors to the U.S. From other countries must provide both a valid drivers license from their country of residence as well as a valid International Drivers License or passport in order to rent from Avis. We are aggressively investigating the customer’s allegations regarding the handling of this matter, as we do not tolerate any form of discrimination. So far, our ongoing investigation suggests that this customer is unfairly maligning us with unfounded accusations.

Usually it was Budget

According to the Wikipedia, "Avis Budget Group, Inc. is the American parent company of Avis Car Rental, Budget Car Rental, Budget Truck Rental, Payless Car Rental, Apex Car Rentals, Maggiore Group, and Zipcar."

Huh? What order did she disobey?
It sounds like you are being misled by bad journalism.

The story falsely implies that an israeli drivers license alone should have been sufficient documentation for a rental.

But company policy cited here proves that is wrong, the journalist didn’t do the 15 second research to establish the customer was wrong from the start.

All foreigners need to provide a passport or international drivers license. The exec didn’t give one to agent and threw a fit, later running to the press and falsely screaming about discrimination. Then lots of freepers duped into demonizing the avis national company

Yeah right. If you rent a lot of cars you probably get out quite often. If this is the case, you will also realize that dumb desk clerks aren’t necessarily high level representatives of corporate policies. Geesh. I would ask you to give Avis a break but am guessing you don’t’ rent nearly as many cars as you say you do.

Stop the Avis bashing. Each and every petty complaint thus far on this thread could apply to every car rental franchise on the planet. This has to do with an idiot employee or two and quite possibly a jerk for a customer. Not Avis.

Except that Avis is backing up their bitch. So that makes the company the party to blame.

My reading of the story is that the clerk correctly upheld company policy and procedures.

All foreigners are required to provide passport or international drivers license, which the customer did not provide to her. The wife admitted as much in the article.

I conclude claims of discrimination are fraudulent.
Claims of the clerk being incompetent are wrong.
Avis is being unfairly maligned.

It turns out the “bitch” simply was doing her job as she was trained, upholding company policies and procedures.

She was taught to require a passport or international drivers license, which the customer didn’t provide.
He can bully and falsely scream discrimination all he wants, it doesn’t change the fact she was doing the right thing according to her company and job.

You got duped into maligning her.

For all we know, this could be an Israeli of Palestinian parents.

You haven't a clue.

RTFA. The customer was Dov Bergwerk, a high-ranking executive at Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, market cap $53b. Read his LinkedIn page.

I’m not sure if they got a quick traffic lesson on how one drives on the opposite side.

Its not hard. I learned how to on a highway during rush hour in a 2nd world country. To make things worse, I had to learn on an automatic; I find automatics to be confusing.

I wonder how his company feels about him falsely crying “discrimination!” and smearing another major company in the press.

I switch to driving on the other side of the road in foreign countries instantly without any trouble.

The problem is when I come back home, somehow that’s when I get confused after having adapted to the other way...

Ridiculous:

“The representative confirmed to him that the Israeli license was an acceptable form of ID and also mentioned that he could show his passport to ameliorate any ID concerns the on-site employees had.”

I am the only one in the big fam (IIRC) that still can drive shift.

I remember, gosh, 25 years ago or so, Matthew Broderick (driver) and Jennifer Grey (passenger) were in an accident that killed two people. Matthew Broderick’s fault. In Ireland.

Somehow the rest of my response got deleted.

I tried to add, "My reading is that Avis has decided to follow the Donald Trump model of leadership and fight back against overgrown crybabies."

Will check Facebook as well.

Avis's lame Facebook response is here. I'm pleased that the comments are running against them.

A manager was involved, not just a desk clerk.

And you don’t know me, so your “guess” is insulting.

BTW, you effectively called me a liar. Nice personal attack. Those generally are not welcome here.

My family is the opposite, everyone can drive stick. I can think of only two who do not (but know how to).
