I have never understood just how South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois got to be classified as “midwestern states”, as when you look at a map they actually are in the central US.
I know, the regions were created by the east coast ruling class based purely on an eastern perspective, but it still urks me.

Agree...If there is a midwest U.S., is there also a mideast U.S.?
From my perspective there are 3 parts, the west-coast , central, and east-coast U.S.

I agree with the misnomer “Midwestern”. A better description is North Central USA.
