I’m pretty sure he’s wrong: The Mahdi in the 1880s held vast territory throughout north Africa, from Sudan to Ethiopia and eastern Chad. I could be mistaken, and some of the borders then weren’t as they are now, but I think this is correct.

  FWIW, my daughter called to tell me she watched a segment of the Today Show this morning where a female host (Savannah Guthrie?) interviewed a repentant jihadist who recommended people of the West begin to discuss/examine Islam openly - leaving the host visibly uncomfortable.
