Hillary Clinton’s claim that she tried to join the Marines
Washington Post ^ | 11/12/2015 | Glenn Kessler

"He looks at me and goes, 'Um, how old are you. And I said, 'Well I am 26, I will be 27.' And he goes, 'Well, that is kind of old for us.' And then he says to me, and this is what gets me, 'Maybe the dogs will take you,' meaning the Army."

-Former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking at a breakfast, Manchester, N.H., Nov. 10, 2015

One Clinton story that has often been greeted with skepticism is her claim, first made in 1994, that she once tried to join the Marines in 1975. On the campaign trail, she brought up the story again.

Can this story be confirmed?

The Facts

Clinton first told this story while addressing a lunch on Capitol Hill honoring military women, about 17 months after becoming first lady:

"You're too old, you can't see and you're a woman," Mrs. Clinton said she was told. “Maybe the dogs would take you," she recalled the recruiter saying. (Actually the military slang is "dogfaces.")

"It was not a very encouraging conversation,” she said. "I decided maybe I'll look for another way to serve my country."

It's fair to say The New York Times account, written by then-reporter Maureen Dowd, was highly skeptical. Dowd noted:

And an astronaut - and, she said she was named after Edmund Hillary who first conquered Everest. Wow, she’s really fantastic in her quests and stuff.

Does anyone believe that as a radical feminist Hillary wouldn’t have raised holy heck if this had actually happened?

She couldn't make it to the recruiting center because she was under sniper fire. So she went home.

“You’re too old, you can’t see and you’re a woman,”

That is the same thought we have today concerning her run for President.

Nice try, PIAPS. Did you take hostile fire when you entered that hot zone known as the Marine recruiting office?

You know she did! The following is an excerpt from the transcript of the battle of Water Cooler Ridge.

"So, I went to the Marine Corps recruiting office and I was met with intense sniper fire shortly after walking through the door. I swear one bullet knocked my glasses off! So, I dove behind a desk to get some cover and I nearly went deaf with the cacophony of small arms fire.

I knew that I had to make it from my position to the recruiter's desk so that I could discuss enlisting. I had to think fast. I was unarmed, but I spied some paperclips and rubber bands on the receptionists desk. In a flash, I grabbed the rubber bands and paperclips and fashioned a crude, but effective slingshot and started laying down enfilade fire from my position and planned to make a zig-zag dash to the recruiter's desk. I screwed up my courage - I had a lot of that because I helped bring down that bully Nixon - and made a break for the recruiter's desk."

Herself was NEVER a serious applicant for military service, any time, anywhere. Even less so than someone like Bill Ayers, noted anti-war protester. Her visit to the recruiting office was more on the order of reconnaissance, looking into means to subvert or sabotage the military mission.

While Herself was never prominent on a national scale, she was against the Vietnam War and led protests against it, showing her disregard for the military and what they were trying to do to hold Communism at bay in Vietnam. The distaste Herself has for all things military persists in her every action even today.

“The dogs”??? since when has anyone ever called The Army that?

Since never. The only service ever referred to as dogs is the Marines, and always "Devil Dogs".

Soldiers have been doggies since WWII. Average soldier is a dogface. Any variation of dog is used.
Marines are only devil dogs... nothing else in that term.

Let's see, where to begin. She was born in 1947, so at best, in 1975, she was 27 going on 28. In August, 1974, she was a Law Professor at the University of Arkansas Fayetteville, bought a house with Bill in the summer of 1975, and married him in October 1975.

So, exactly when was it she talked to this Marine recruiter?
