Open thread: Trump to make “Saturday Night Live” great again
Hot Air ^ | 11/7/2015

11:30 p.m. ET on NBC. If this guy can make this show funny, making America great again will be a snap.

If he’s smart, and he is, 80 percent of the jokes will be at his own expense. The intrigue lies with the other 20 percent. How nasty will he and the cast get with his competition? Tonight’s an unusual opportunity for Trump to humiliate the other candidates in front of a big audience, if SNL is willing to play along. A cutting joke about Carson or Bush or Rubio will become a prism through which some low-information voters view them going forward, just as Trump’s own “low energy” putdown of Jeb ended up sticking to him. That’s a big subplot tonight: How eager will the mostly liberal SNL writers be to help Trump score points against the rest of the field?

The other big subplot is whether anyone will disrupt the show. That dopey PAC that made the ad of little kids cursing at Trump over immigration has been publicizing a $5,000 reward for any audience member who shouts “Trump is a racist” while the broadcast is in progress. I’ve even seen speculation on social media that the cast itself might double-cross Trump somehow by doing something to humiliate him because of his politics. I’ll believe that when I see it, but this gets to the special intrigue of Trump appearing on this show of all shows: You never know what’ll come out of his mouth and you never know what might go wrong on live TV. Anything can happen.

Taped and just watched SNL. Reminded me about half way through why I stopped watching this POS excuse for humor.

I agree with most of the commentary. The skits on the whole were lame, nothing close to JImmy FALLON. I mean, like Jack Benny, he got laughs by saying nothing. Hilarious.

SNL OTOH was just a montage of filth. They have a hundred young writers? are you kidding me? Pure filth, which fortunately for Trump was on later.

I agree the best was the beginning.

I think for the most part Trump came away unscathed. The skits were not funny. The writing was thinly cloaked attempt to make fun of conservatives. They were very rude to Ben Carson to the point that they should invite him on.

They make Hillary actually looking the worst.

Like I said earlier, Fortunately, for Trump, the worst was in the second half. I hope most of Iowa were in bed. The language on this show is pure scatology.

It’s like a bad vaudeville act where, if no one laughs pull you pants down. With SNL, and their shows on live across small towns, it comes down to pee pee, ka ka jokes.

I’m very very very sure, that Trump nixed the worst, as these on the whole were terrible.

The was really the beginning where they parodied MSNBCs questioning of the democrats. The guy doing Sanders was really funny.

The Drunk Uncle skit was long and stupid.

And the singer, SAya, was a poor Lady Gaga Act.

This skit was funny, esp the PResident of Mexico bringing Trump a check, and he says “this is way too much.”

Marie,

My thoughts exactly. I think SNL jumped the shark when they did a tasteless parody of Karen Carpenter, mocking her volemia after she was dead. I haven’t watched it since.

A part from a few opening skits...it was terrible writing, and to think they have a hundred writers?

They need to pair it down to a couple, and start over.

The actors, are talented, to get to that level you have to go through a lot of improve, but still if the writing is bad, it’s bad. It was nothing more than pee pee, ka ka stuff at the end.

It looked like they threw this together in just a few days.

The bottom line, SNL shows that modern comedy is really hate filled humor.

These people couldn’t carry Jack Benny, JOhnny, Henny Youngman or countless other’s shoes.

In short, I laughed only a couple times, then fast forwared it about half way through.

I didn’t think it was funny. But SNL gave up being funny a long time ago. Or my sense of funny isn’t what it used to be.

Here’s my take of the funniest of the show, all at the beginning mostly.

1. 2018 Oval Office skit. Pretty good for the most part, and the funniest is when the President of Mexico comes in with his monthly payment to Trump for the wall. lol

Trump says, “Enrique!!!! YOu paid too much!”

He says, “Nonsense, nothing brings neighbors together more than a wall.” Or something like that.

2. The guy yelling “racist” was good.

3. Trump standing next to the two guys doing is funny when you see it the second time. Trump is a good sport, no doubt.

4. Mistaking one of the cast for Rosie O Donnell was funny. I wonder if Trump actually made that one up.

5. I think a skit of Trump with Hillary would have been funny, but he probably nixed it.

I think we’re in agreement. Only a couple laughs IMO.

Actually my first reaction to your post was what??? Then I said it must mean something, so I searched King Tut skit and realized what you meant. I rarely if ever watched SNL, even in its heyday, mainly because even then I was aware that they were all one-sided as to whom they would ridicule.

DH said when he saw DT’s tie said ‘that’s a terrible looking tie”. The man did look a bit disheveled. A bit out of character. He does have signature ties which sell, doesn’t he?

SNL - show lame outdated and old. It was once never missed and was so FUNNY, but like many other good things.....that was years ago. The only reason for viewing = DONALD TRUMP! Not even The Donald could save this liberal disaster. How embarrassing for the host and the crew.

That musical guest made “Lady Gaga” seem normal in comparison.

Trump said this morning on FNFs that he vetoed a Ben Carson sketch that he thought was in poor taste.

Curb your Enthusiasm was David's Show on HBO.

It must have been in re-runs late evenings back when I still watched TV.

It was hilarious because it played off his Phobias.

He just was annoyingly offensive, I couldn't hit the remote fast enough.

I watched it last night and Trump made the skits funny.
I also saw a replay on the Comedy Central network of his 2011 SNL performance last night. It was funnier because they apparently had better writers and actors. Darrel Hammond and Jimmy Fallon were on there back in the day. Trump and all were very funny.
All in All, Trump made it work with what he had. ;)

I had not watched SNL in decades. Did not like it much.

There are so many commercials so as to make it unwatchable.

I did like the part about the Mexican president bringing his payment. Loved it!

I agree. I was giving this some thought this morning. Is it partially a jaded audience that continually asks for better laughs, or is it just terrible writing and poor comedic skills?

Honestly, I don’t think I’ve lost my funny bone, and I don’t think others like you have either.

While some of these skits are marginally entertaining, for the most party they’re just “B” grade material, some even “D” grade these days.

Other folks make me laugh. It doesn’t have to be off-color either. For me, the best comedy is quick witted, not bash you in the face level stuff.

I watched Drunk Uncle last night. That was totally lost on me. I’m so sick of the racial slant, where Whites are habitually insulted as if they harbor every stereotype known to man addressing White toward Black opinions or character traits.

It’s open season on White men on SNL. They’re shown as bigots, racists, and deniers of the Black experience. That couldn’t be farther from the truth, but Whites are sick and tired of being blamed for everything from slavery which ended shortly after the Civil War, to unwed mothers and the plight of the Black family today.

Yes racism lingered, but White racism against Blacks is far less than racism of Blacks against Whites. It needs to stop.

Man up Blacks. Take at least 5% ownership of your plight and we can talk. Right now it’s closer to 0.00005%.

Whites aren’t perfect. Who knew? Blacks aren’t perfect either. If a White man commits a crime, he’s considered a criminal. If a Black man commits a crime, he’s considered a victim of Whites.

Racial humor is D O A. Racism isn’t funny in real life and it isn’t funny in humor. And yes, Whites can be the victims of racism, and SNL proved it again last night.

The over the top sexist presentation by those two supposed “whores” was what I call in your face insulting. It wasn’t funny on any level. It was just crass. I’m surprised Trump would dignify it with participation at the end of the skit. It as beneath him.

At any rate, overall it was a higher level of SNL than I’ve seen in recent years. I don’t watch all the time, but when I do tune in, it’s almost unbearable to watch.

Last night did provide a few laughs.

It got SNL it’s highest ratings in three years. (preliminary numbers, not sure if they change)

It is interesting to watch the ratings, because it reveals which group supports trump. The older the better through about 55-60. Then they dip a bit. I’ve seen this touched on in focus groups so it may be a valid indicator.

Thanks for the comments.

Early reports are best ratings in three years.

He’s showing better the older people are. I’ve seen this mentioned before.

His participation was ok. Didn’t strike me as all that great, but he didn’t write the material either.

It may be a long time before he can show up again unless it comes quickly. I think he’s going to be tied up for about eight years.
