Donald Trumpâs high standing in the polls is attributable entirely to the fact that heâs not a Washington insider, not part of the racket, and despite his wealth really might actually give a damn about the Little Guy. So why is he saying things like this?
Donald Trump on Wednesday defended government property seizures as a ânecessary thing,â even when it means involuntarily taking property from a private owner to transfer it to another business. Trump was speaking to reporters outside the capital statehouse moments before formally filing his candidacy for the February primary, and the Washington Examiner pressed him on his record of using eminent domain laws to expand his casino empire.
âProperty rights are a big issue in New Hampshire,â the Examiner noted. âIn Atlantic City you used eminent domain laws aggressively to expand your casino.â
Trump interjected by calling this a âstupid questionâ before launching into a defense of eminent domain. âI am all for private property rights,â Trump said. âThereâs nobody who wants property taken away less than I do, believe me. I would lose a lot of money if my property were taken away. But when youâre building a road, when youâre building a highway, when youâre building whatever it is youâre building from a municipal standpoint, you may need a corner of a piece of property.â As he said this, he pinched his fingers together to demonstrate the smallness of the property.
The abstract reasoning may be sound â although in the Supreme Courtâs disgraceful Kelo decision it certainly was not â but the optics are terrible. It smacks of Romneyism, a cluelessness about how ordinary people live their lives.
How about welfare reform coupled with an end to sovereign immunity? That would knock out all the trouble with lawless immigration.
It was kind of hard to read your post, with all those funny characters in it.
Didn’t say it had been done I said Kelo opened the door that it could be done.
No candidate is perfect. Time the Punditry grow up and quit looking for pathetic nonsense to attack Trump with.
On the list of issues facing this country Trump scored well on the top 50. That he is squishy on the 51st issue is not a reason for concern.
lol
Not where I live.
As I said, there's lots of pieces to eminent domain which probably should get sorted out. However, using it as a political tool doesn't help.
As opposed to the 10% of Freepers who start screaming hysteric emotional hyperbolic tirades the minute they hear the name “Trump” mentioned.
“no bar to your county government taking you house and land at a song”
The Constitution protects you against that and that Constitutional protection was not abrogated by the Kelo decision.
Eminent domain laws require market value reparations; most states have passed protective laws outlawing what you fear; the Supreme Court is the body that made the Kelo decision; Trump has never taken or advocated anyone having their property taken for a song; if Trump were president he still would have no authority over taking your property.
As Trump stated, he has plenty of property and doesn’t want anyone messing with it.
It is not your property that you should be worried about; your country and your freedom are already being taken from you as you haggle over a Supreme Court decision that Trump had nothing to do with. If amnesty comes in, you WILL be dispossessed of everything you have.
I had to search a little to find it, but here’s the video. http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/trump-says-government-property-seizures-are-necessary-thing/article/2575631
He spoke mainly about using eminent domain for building necessary infrastructure, but he also defended using it to benefit big business. We little people are just too stupid to understand how necessary it is.
Trump never built any casinos in AC with eminant domain. The buildings were already there. This is a issue to people who want to distract from the real issues.
“Donât know how the Trump supporters can defend and justify Donald Trump defending government taking away private property away from private property owners.”
Read the Constitution.
If you don’t like eminent domain, get an amendment.
I already said “in some states” so I didn’t think it was necessary to repeat myself.
In 1992 B Clinton made the comment he didn’t believe any of the nations “natural resources” should belong to an individual but should belong to the nation as a whole.
Just because you owned the land he didn’t believe that meant you owned the natural resources on or beneath the surface because “natural resources” means belonging to the country.
I don’t have a doubt Kelo is the first step in seizing the “natural resources” from the rightful owners.
I know,I was making fun of the nay-sayers
Duly noted.
You started this conversation in post #193 talking about “my” mineral rights.
I live in Texas.
This would be an improvement.
I tried to explain to you that the “Taking” language was a rational understanding at the time, that has been bastardized since and was never intended to mean that under that clause, the local and state authorities also had the right of seizure with compensation automatically. It only applied to the federal government and under state law it conflicts with private property rights.
Now the federal governments’ interests may under circumstances often move into the interstate area, as in the building of a highway, the building of military bases, the building of anything that benefits the collective “all” or “we”.
But it never was intended to aid a private enterprise in it’s search for profits, nor the local city government in search of tax revenue.
If you see it otherwise, then yes, you got a brain washing at some point by some special interests.
We have gifted and already educated Americans, but they cost more.
Although I like a lot of what Trump says, it’s things like this that is why I don’t trust him.
Ted Cruz remains my first choice.
