CBS News ^ | OCTOBER 26, 2015 | CBS News

Just under 100 days out from the Iowa Caucuses, a new CBS News poll shows that Ben Carson has pulled even with Donald Trump there. For the Democrats, Hillary Clinton is three points up on Bernie Sanders. CBS News correspondent Nancy Cordes has the story from Des Moines.

When his numbers aren’t gamed anymore, he’s going to lose all his support.

Right down there with Jebby ‘cry baby’ Bush; Rubio, and the rest....

GO TRUMP ALL THE WAY TO THE OVAL OFFICE 2016!!!

Look at Fiorina. This is basically what they tried with her.

It’s a stupid strategy. It just winds up making Trump look like he can weather any storm.

Okay..., thanks GOPe. Trump is going to look yuge next week.

Carson has a serious ground game in Iowa.

Craig Robinson at ‘The Iowa Republican’ has been covering Carson’s under the radar campaign.

Polls shouldn't be so far apart so what's up?

It is not uncommon for a poll to be an outlier. Could be when they polled, the method used, the time of day they called - any number of things. It would also be interesting to know what any previous CBS poll for Iowa showed. I would imagine the trend in this poll is still consistent (sharp movement toward Carson), but I'd like to see the numbers.

I thought Carson was up on Trump. Now he's tied. Does that mean Trump is now surging?

No, it just means you have one poll that doesn't agree with the other 5 that have come out in the same time period. Last Thursday and Friday, you had polls from Quinnipiac, Bloomberg and an internal Jindal poll showing Carson up by 8-9 points. On Sunday, you had this CBS/YouGov poll showing a tie. Today, you had the Monmouth poll and the Loras College poll showing Carson up by 12-14 points.

Also, the last YouGov poll had Trump up by 4 in Iowa, so even this poll shows movement toward Carson.

This is terrible news for Trump!! President Huckabee and President Santorum also won Iowa!!

So did President Obama... So the argument that the winner in Iowa never wins the nomination or the presidency doesn't exactly hold water. It is only one small state but many campaigns have been ended in Iowa.

Good description of the sequence of polls. Clearly, the CBS poll is the outlier which makes sense since the media (CBS) would love to see Hillary facing Donald Trump. Dr. Carson scares the begeezus out of the media, and the Dems.

I don’t think you have to be an “ethanol-addicted” Iowan to be insulted by that tweet; just an Iowan should suffice.

I don’t know why anyone would be surprised that Carson’s ahead in Iowa. Iowa almost always chooses the most religious candidate in their caucuses. Santorum, Huck, Bush in ‘80, there are probably more examples. I am a Trump supporter but I like Carson too. Still, I don’t think Trump will have any problems defeating Carson in the first month of voting, starting in February.

Many campaigns were lost in Iowa, including those of Santorum and Huckabee - who won in Iowa. Yes, it’s a very confusing state and it all depends on who comes out on that chilly night three months from now to stand for hours in a corner across over 1,000 different precincts. It’s so very strange.

Ben Carson Pretends He Doesn’t Really Want To End Medicare By Heather

Republish Reprint

As we already discussed here, GOP presidential candidate and former neurosurgeon Ben Carson told Politico that he wants to replace Medicare and Medicaid with cradle-to-grave health savings accounts. When asked by Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace if he really wants to put an end to Medicare, Carson stammered and stuttered his way through the interview and tried to pretend that’s not what he wants to do, even though we all know that would be the end result if you move the funds from one program to the other.

Here’s more from The Hill on Carson’s train wreck of an interview on Fox: Ben Carson says he won’t end Medicare: Republican Ben Carson on Sunday rejected the notion that he will end Medicare if he is elected president. “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace asked Carson if his plan was to end the program, which serves 49 million senior citizens. “That’s completely false, Carson said. “That’s a narrative someone’s putting out there to scare people.”

Carson said the program he’s outlined uses health savings accounts starting from the time a person is born until their death to largely eliminate the needs for people to be dependent on government programs. “I would never get rid of the programs,” he said. “I would provide people with an alternative and I think they will see the alternative we’re going to outline is so much better than anything else.”

Wallace pushed Carson on what appeared to be a policy change, asking him if people will have a choice between health savings accounts and the traditional Medicare “I do not believe in imposing things on people,” Carson said. “I believe in presenting things that are so attractive that people will quickly migrate to them.”

It’s pretty bad when even a host on Fox isn’t buying the B.S. you’re shoveling. Wallace pushed and pushed Carson on where the money would come from for his program, and Carson either doesn’t even understand what his own health care proposal would do, or he’s just lying through his teeth.

Iowa’s evangelical power only showed up in the last two cycles in the power vacuum left when Gov. Branstad stepped away from politics and the RINO establishment couldn’t get organized without him. He and his machine are back this time, although it isn’t a given that they will regain the ability to win caucus straw votes.

Very true. I can understand a Trump supporter arguing that winning Iowa is not critical to winning the nomination - that seems to be self-evident. What I can't understand is why the same Trump supporters who were crowing about Trump leading in the polls a few weeks ago are now loudly denouncing the same polls as fixed, biased or insignificant now that Trump no longer leads.

The Trump supporters should accept that for whatever reason, at the moment Trump is behind Carson in Iowa. That could change, or someone else could pass them both before January - it has happened before. I think it is smart to take ALL polls with a grain of salt, especially this far out from the election - regardless of whether your candidate is ahead or behind.

Of course, if your candidate is only polling 1-2% consistently, then it probably it time for them to get out...

Can Trump lose Iowa to Carson, then win the next 49 states, and still lose nomination to Carson?

Historically about 5% of Iowans bother to caucus. That is why Iowa is not a good indicator of national trends.

Crooks and Lairs? Seriously? Why not just link to Democratic Underground or Daily Kos?

Crooks and Lairs is a radical left wing blog. I never thought I’d see someone source it here on FR.

I know. Just trying to add some levity. Don’t read too much more into it than that my friend :-). Six of 9 Republican winners in Iowa have gone on to win the precidency but 3 were unapposed, making 3 of 9 in a contested fight.
