Jeb Bush’s 86% burn rate underscores fundraising struggles for the GOP establishment
Washington Post ^ | 10/16/15 | James Hohmann and Elise Viebeck

No more shock and awe, Jeb Bush has become just another guy in a crowded field of presidential aspirants. The former Florida governor spent 86 percent of the money he collected over the past three months, burning through $11.5 million of the $13.4 million that he raised. “He should have (raised) at least $25 million,” a major Republican fundraiser told Matea Gold and Philip Rucker.

Jeb’s third quarter report, filed hours before last night’s deadline, showed Bush with less cash on hand right now than Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Ben Carson. The struggling campaign has slashed staff salaries and tried to cut costs in other ways, including requiring the use of cheaper hotels.

Jeb’s haul is still a lot of money, for sure, but it is a staggeringly underwhelming figure for the son and brother of former presidents, both of whom hosted multiple events to shake the family network’s money tree. “Some donors are really nervous,” another top Bush fundraiser told Matea and Phil.

Despite tons of pro-Bush ads airing in the early states, and Jeb’s aggressive schedule, his numbers are lingering and languishing in the single digits. The campaign chalks up its high burn rate to building an infrastructure that can win over the long haul, but insiders fear Jeb is overly dependent on his super PAC. The big open question is whether establishment Republicans are nervous enough to start thinking about throwing their weight behind another candidate or whether they will stick with Jeb in the long-term out of loyalty to the Bush dynasty.

That’s because he’s thinking in “PESOS!” He has no conception of the value of a US Dollar.

The GOP establishment knows realistically that Bush has no chance.

So far they’re at a loss to stop the Trump insurgency.

And Bush’s campaign may well go the way of Walker.

If you’re not overwhelmingly popular or look politically viable, the money will dry up.

And money is the mother’s milk of politics.

I have an idea for he GOPe to “stop the Trump insurgency”, it’s really simple... just switch to supporting Ted Cruz. There, that wasn’t so hard, was it?

Meanwhile Trump has barely spent his own beer money and is currently in the lead. Hmmm, maybe it's the message?

It’s not just the message, it’s the man. We like them both.

There’s nothing remotely likeable about the girl, Jebbie, who’s own mommy said should stay indoors this election.

All the CoC handlers who gave money at jebtard! just flushed it down the toilet. It pleases me to to no end to know that they wasted millions.

An 86% burn rate is an appropriate symbol for the Bush family’s entire attitude toward fiscal responsibility. They were never poor and never had to economize or tighten their belts so they spend like drunken sailors. George Sr. and George Jr. did it as president. Jeb is doing it in his campaign and would do it as president too. They have no idea how to cut costs and spend wisely, and don’t really care to learn how.

If he drops out now what happens to the money left over?

They can raise and spend all the money they want, they will not convince Americans to abandon the rule of law.

Yeb is being fleeced by the beltway consultant class. They’ll push for him to remain in the race as long as possible to keep the money flowing in.

Reality: they would never support Cruz and Cruz would never win a general. I know this is a tough pill to swallow.

Ted will be a fine AG in the Trump Administration, then he will be Donald's first USSC appointee. I think that deal is already done, two months ago.

No surprise Trump is hated by the consultant class. Frank Luntz tried to sell him his polling services and was promptly booted out of Trump’s office. The consultant class didn’t know Trump doesn’t do polls.

Not true, Mr GOPe himslef, George Will was saying nice things about Cruz just the other day. The only person that truly scares our ruling class is Donald Trump. Even Ted Cruz is acceptable if the alternative is Trump. Ted is "manageable" as his votes for the Patroit Act, TPA, Corker amendment show. He is also manageable on immigration. Trump isn't manageable. Trump is his own man, Trump comes with no strings attached.
