Obama Administration Bans All Pork Products From Prison Menus

The federal Bureau of Prisons, a subdivision of President Barack Obama's Justice Department, has banished all pork products from the menus in all federal prisons ...

The government says it made the decision to do this because a survey showed that inmates do not like eating pork products.

The Council on American-Islamic relations said “we welcome” the move by the government to deny pork to prisoners, but warned that it might spark “Islamophobia.”

...

They just don’t like the taste of pork….

“The National Pork Producers Council isn’t buying it. 'I find it hard to believe that a survey would have found a majority of any population saying, ‘No thanks, I don’t want any bacon,'” said Dave Warner, a spokesman for the Washington-based trade association, which represents the nation’s hog farmers.

CAIR told the Post that banning pork in federal prisons would accommodate Muslim prisoners:

“’In general we welcome the change because it’s facilitating the accommodation of Muslim inmates,’ said Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations

Could you flesh that out, a bit?

Sure. There is the presupposition that certain scriptures in the new testament did away with food laws given by Christ, the Lord, in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14.

The biggest one is in Acts 10 and Peter's vision where God used an image of clean and unclean animals in that vision.

Modern thought says that this is where Christ did away with the food laws. However, scripture is quite clear what the vision was about:

Act 10:28 Then he said to them, "You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

In chapter 11 Peter explains to others also what the vision meant. In no way does any biblical figure explain that it meant they could eat any kind of animal. They knew that it meant they had to change their attitude toward gentiles coming into the church.

The reason for the church's change came about mostly because of Roman persecution of Jews. There were a series of revolts against Rome by the Jews in the 1st and 2nd centuries. As a result if one looked too "Jewish" they were persecuted and suspect. Early Christians were practically indistinguishable from Jews. So they distinguished themselves by avoiding looking Jewish. This meant discarding food laws, the weekly sabbath and the annual holy days. Anything that might "brand" them in a public way as Jewish.

That's a general overview...

“Nope but it’s a common misunderstanding and a long tradition.”

Wow, you’ve never eaten pork in your life?
