On Thursday, Republican 2016 presidential contender Dr. Ben Carson stated on CNN that the Holocaust would have been less likely had Jews been armed. In his new book, A Perfect Union, Carson contends, “Through a combination of removing guns and disseminating propaganda, the Nazis were able to carry out their evil intentions with relatively little resistance.”

Another important point that shouldn't be overlooked or downplayed.

That's why most of us are here. Unfortunate it's changed in the last 50 years or so. We can thank Ted Kennedy and his version of immigration reform.

Paper match books are still available at most grocery store in boxes of fifty. Same with small wooden matches. Cheap <$2 around here. The strike any where kind might still be around but I’ve not seen any lately.

One of the most notable of the Finns was Lauri Torni later know as Larry Thorne.

Fought in the Finnish Army against the Soviet invaders, received the Mannerheim Cross, Finland’s highest award.

Continued the fight against the Soviets in the German Sondercomamando Nord, receiving the Iron Cross.

Joined the US Army after the war ending in the Special Forces and MACV-SOG. Shot down in his first helicopter SOG operation in Viet Nam. Received Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, 2 Purple Hearts

Two words: Viet Cong. Sure, they eventually got foreign support eventually, but they used captured French and US weapons and made very little themselves.

They don't think Americans can manage that? We have machine shops in nearly every industrial park in every state.

Just a historic side note, in no way meant to diminish the courage of those that fought in the Warsaw Ghetto. Field expedient weapons for those that had little.

Like every occupied (Finland wasn’t) European country other than Poland Norway had a government, collaborationist government if you prefer. The name Quisling is held in disrepute. And yes, Jews were rounded up and transported to the camps, as were political enemies. Sweden, though neutral and a haven for some Jews who managed to get there, was kind enough to allow the trains to cross their neutral country. Not many Jews there to begin with, about half of less than two thousand perished.

Perhaps, your understanding of Norwegian resistance to the Nazis, is different than mine. We stopped the escalation, by killing Nazis, and hiding/safekeeping Jews.

Not at all, Norway had a robust resistance. I'm referring to the government(s), not the populace. Much of which resisted, much of which collabored. Most of which I suspect concentrated on survival. I wonder if Quisling and Vichy would resonate were it not for the strength of local resistance.

Two other countries which deserve mention. Bulgaria deported zero Jews, though they did impose discriminatory laws, and their army rounded up Jews in Greece. But they successfully resisted as regards their local population. And Italy, prior to their surrender they deported zero Jews. Italian fascism had no antisemitic overtones, probably due to Mussalinis long time propaganda advisor/biographer/mistress Margherita Sarfatti and though Italy's surrender in 1943, there were no deportations. Leading the new government in the north Mussalini did the bidding of the Reich. Unfortunately at the time of surrender the major cities were in German hands.

Statistics are often misleading. There have been several articles which I haven't posted but think I will on a poll, major poller I think, which determined that only about 32% of Americans would have helped Jews under similar circumstances. Sever liberal publications were horrified. My reaction, wow, 32%, that's about the estimates of colonials who supported the Revolution. If 32% of Europeans would have risked their lives to save Jews, things would have been very different. Most people just avert their eyes.

Wow, I am going to post it. I had it backwards, 31% said they would not risk their lives, 69% said they would. I think the poll is probably suspect, but that number is amazingly high.

The Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising started with a handful of pistols, and held off the Nazis for months, when all of Poland basically fell in 3 days.
The Poles bravely fought for almost a month. Their fates were sealed when the Soviets invaded 16 days into the war. 70,000 Poles died in the 36 day invasion.
