Climate change is real. Climate change is happening. And we have an obligation to address climate change for ourselves, our children and future generations.
With that said, the Sierra Club needs to do better.
During a hearing of a Judiciary subcommittee on Tuesday regarding regulation and minorities, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who is running for the Republican nomination on an arch-conservative platform that includes rejection of mainstream climate change science, seized an opportunity to show off his debating skills.

..He asks Mair about the satellite temperature record, which he says has shown no warming during the last 18 years.
Mair should recognize this as a common, largely discredited attack on climate science. While it is true temperatures spiked during 1998 due to a very strong El Nino, if one does not cherry pick data the satellite record does show steadily rising temperatures over the last 35 years.

The satellite data has been well established for some time. Yes, if one looks at data from 1998 to present using one of the satellite data sets, a case can be made that there has been no warming. However when one looks at the entire data set there is a clear upward trend that continues today.

Global land and ocean temperature anomalies show clear, continued warming. (NOAA)
These are relatively simple points to refute, and I would argue that if youre going before a Senate subcommittee led by Ted Cruz, youd better be ready to handle these kinds of queries.
Otherwise youre just doing your organization, and the field of climate science as a whole, a great disservice....

I made that sentence above the last chart bold to show that Ted Cruz is right. From the satellite data, there is no global warming and the guy admitted it.
It wasn’t a fair fight.
Mair showed himself to be a dolt. He will not remain in his post. The Chronicle is wrong, of course, on every detail of its defense of globull warmth. It got one right, however. Mair is a dolt.
the guy who wrote this article doesn’t understand math or science. There is a clear break in the trend and lumping all data together and drawing a line through it is not only silly and lazy, but fraudulently misleading. We are dealing with a chaotic system - drawing pretty straight lines through lots of data points doesn’t make it a line.
What I see in the top graph is a temperature swing of a whopping 1 degree Celsius (or 1.8 degree Fahrenheit).
I am skeptical in part because such a small temperature difference is most likely buried in the standard error of the measurements. In addition, the task of even coming up with an average temperature is extremely problematic. On the surface, a lot will depend on where the thermometers are placed. For instance, placing thermometers in a city will give higher temperature readings than placing thermometers near a field. The amount of shade, of reflected light, quantities of water nearby—there are so many variables that I doubt it is possible to get an accurate “average temperature” for the whole earth. Satellite data would be more accurate, because it can measure over a large area, which would even out a lot of the variability inherent with trying to take surface temperatures—however, I would doubt that temperatures even measured by satellite would have a standard error (or standard deviation) of a degree or less.
In the bottom graph, I see data compiled over a long period in which temperature measurement technology has changed a lot. I do not know what technologies were used, but I suspect that mercury filled thermometers were used in the 1800s, and in the mid 1900s, satellite technologies began to take over. And that could explain why blue predominates on the left and red on the right. Another explanation would be urbanization.
It is hard to say much about either graph, really. Neither one of them says a thing about the methodology used to derive the temperatures. The methodology has as much to do with the results as anything, and you can’t combine methodologies without fully validating that they give the same results.
Partial list of words that should not appear in the same sentence as “science”: Settled; Consensus; Mainstream
Global Warming is caused by people farts.
Emergency Legislation to ban farts is needed now!
10 years + prison time per fart!
Also certain foods to be banned...refried beans, tacos, burritos, etc.
Please contribute to: KEEP OUR AIR FRESH (KOAF!)
It is clear that man-made methane must be banned. No more Mexican food!
I make AGW my first litmus test right off the bat as to whether I will or won’t vote for a candidate. Sure there are politicians who are purely uninformed, don’t see a reason to dig into the 97% nonsense and for that matter, don’t consider the issue of climate as important as other issues that politicians have to be up to speed on....however, I suspect these are an extreme minority. I suspect that almost all those politicians who spout AGW nonsense know that it’s crap and they are just spouting off a belief of the mythical 97% because they think that is the way the wind blows for them to line up with the most voters. The fact that Cruz is the only Republican candidate who does not pussyfoot around this issue tells me all I need to know as far as him being a candidate I can trust..... because if other candidates are willing to make that compromise on their integrity on this issue, they will compromise their integrity on any issue.
Tired, so tired of this ridiculous "consensus" argument. You could have mustered a 97% consensus in Nazi Germany for Aryan racial theory, or in Soviet Russia for Lysenko biology. You do that at the point of a gun, or these days, at the risk of loss of grant money, character assassination, and firing. None of these have anything to do with science and no one who really honors science will stoop to that argument.
Plus this has nothing to do with causation. The climate change people are desperate to prove that the chafes are the work of man, in large part because they are misanthropic. They claim that man is the cause of it all because they want to control mankind. In effect they want to maintain stability by sacrificing virgins to the volcano.
Yes. It is all the fault of humans. I frequently suggest to them that they
refrain from breeding and refuse all medical care when they tell me this
on threads elsewhere.
Also the more predators in the wild, the better, to keep out humans and
eventually eliminate ranching and hunting. Those are also evil, you see.
Agenda 21 has made frightening progress out there in lib land.

More like 10-0. That bordered on abuse but the affirmative action moron of the Sierra club deserved every bit of it.
Most excellent summation. I hope you teach it often.
I don’t think Cruz actually did that well with it. If someone throws out the “97% . . . “ thing, the first thing to ask a guy like this is, “what exactly do those scientists agree on”? Sure, 97% of scientists probably do agree that the Earth has warmed and humans have played some role in it, But the real question is SIGNIFICANCE. If it’s insignificant, then there’s no point in ruining our way of life over it. If it’s significant, depending on how significant, it would in theory justify action, provided said actions could be predicted to have a measurable effect. There is no way that “97% of scientists” could possibly be in agreement on the degree of significance and how effective any actions taken to address it might or might not be. In fact very few believe that we run the risk of catastrophic impacts, and almost no one believes that current and proposed policies to address will have any significant measurable impact.
