This is an interesting op ed. The writer, I believe, narrowly focuses his argument to avoid such meat and potatoes issues as the EXIMBANK or the PACIFIC TRADE DEAL as well as being poll obsessed about the supposed negative effects of a government shut down. Freeper commentary would be appreciated.

“Here’s the problem: Mr. Obama passed his legislation when he was president and had control of the House and the Senate. Republicans don’t have control of the presidency, and therefore cannot institutionally undo what he did without veto-proof majorities in both chambers.”

Wrong. Congress controls the purse. Even if we only held the House, we could defund Obamacare. They are all just too afraid of being blamed for a shutdown to do it.

He also conveniently ignores the Iran deal, the harsh treatment of Israel, all the executive orders he is signing, The EPA’s takeover of every puddle and drainage ditch in the country.....

This guy has serious denial problems.

I don’t know if illegal aliens are drug dealers and rapist (many are) but I do know they ALL are lawbreakers.

“Shutting down the federal government would not defund Obamacare, which is an entitlement.”

More hogwash. It wasn’t shutting down the government that would defund Obamacare, it would be not passing any spending bills that included funding for it that would defund it. The government shutting down would just be the inevitable consequence of Obama refusing to sign those spending bills.

" ... as being poll obsessed about the supposed negative effects of a government shut down."

There is the rub. Without a two thirds majority in both houses of Congress, the only weapon that can be used against the Dictator and his Regime is the power of the purse and shutting down the government until Obama caves. The only thing is Obama has the balls to resist, the GOPe, not so much.

“The net result would be that nothing substantive would be achieve while politically, Republicans would only hurt themselves leading up to a crucial presidential year.”

Guess what? We don’t care that the establishment thinks it would hurt them politically. We didn’t elect them to spend all their time worrying about their re-election prospects, we elected them to REPRESENT US and do what WE TELL THEM to do.

If we tell them to defund Planned Parenthood, they should say “YES SIR” and do it, and not argue with us and tell us why we are wrong.

Peter Wahner? Twin brother to Anthony Weiner per chance?
This fool will need to listen to Ted Cruz's speech before the US Senate during the Planned Parenthood debacle to get an idea on what is actually going on and why conservatives are angry with Boehner and McConnell.

As for the claim that the GOP Congress keeps rolling over and giving President Obama everything he wants, it’s simply wrong. What exactly has Mr. Obama gotten through since Republicans have controlled Congress? What large new initiative has he passed? The answer, of course, is nothing.

I seem to recall that the nuke "deal" with Iran, flaws and all, is now being implemented. First, there was the Corker bill. Then, the Senate tried but declined to use the "nuclear option" to invoke cloture on Democrat filibusters.

That's for a start. I may have missed something important.

I have heard many who support this guy, a stealth rhino who worked in the Reagan administration. I cannot agree here, it it what they have not done that disturbs me. How about Bonehead's promise to defund executive amnesty? Or passing the Crominbus bill? Or caving on Lynch as AG? There are many others. The two feckless leaders--Bonehead and the turtle McDumbo--have not even attempted to pass a bill repealing Obamacare. Pass one, put it on Obama's desk desk and let him take the blame for vetoing it. You are part of the problem Pete when you only go half way in support of the Rhinos but never mention what should be done.

I consider this disingenuous.

Congress controls the money. Congress passes a budget. Congress funds the entire government -- with the exception of Planned Parenthood.
Obama can veto the budget, risking a shutdown of the whole government -- and the media says "Look! The Republicans are shutting down the government!"
And the Republicans say, "Oops! Sorry! We didn't mean to be jerks. We will fund Planned Parenthood."

That makes me angry.

It's not the checks and balances. It's the Republican refusal to use the rightful power which is theirs and which they won through the electoral process. The Republicans do not consider themselves to be in charge of an important branch of government. They seem to think Obama has all the power so [shrug] what can they do?

The Republicans are NOT acting within the framework of government established by the Founders. The Republicans have given up.

THAT'S the problem.

“Those who are furious still have to operate in the real world. And in the real world – in the American system of government, at least – there are institutional and constitutional restraints on what many on the right want to happen.”

The problem with this line of thought is that those restraints are fragile. If this situation continues, the anger will not abate, and if our representatives won’t do what needs to be done, people will take matters into their own hands. Conservatives should not want things to get to that point, because you can’t control that genie once he is out of the bottle.

As for the situation with illegal immigration, in recent years net migration from Mexico has fallen to zero, and perhaps less.

Wehner is despicable. He overtly lies in this article in order to cover for his big gov't beliefs.

Here is a link and chart from Powerline on what has happened with immigration since 1900:

The United States is taking in more immigrants than at any time in our history, while at the same time making little or no effort to assimilate them. No one can know what the consequences of this experiment will be. This chart, created by the Center for Immigration Studies from Census Bureau data, plots the number of immigrants living in the U.S. and their share of the population, from 1900 to 2014 and projected through 2060. As of last year, the U.S. was home to a record 42.4 million immigrants, legal and illegal, representing 13.3% of the nation’s population.

he idea that we would deport 11 million illegal immigrants is risible.

Ok for the 100th time. You don't have to deport 11 million, 20 million etc. You depart 1 million, make their lives miserable, drag them through court take their assets. Then send them home. When the other 20 million see what is going on they will leave ON THEIR OWN. Why is this so hard for the MSM to understand?

That’s on him though. Let him cook the books and try to fund it. Congress shouldn’t make his job easier by apportioning funding for it.
