A North Carolina woman says she is happier than ever after fulfilling her lifelong wish of becoming blind.
Shuping said that her fascination with blindness began when she was about 6-years old.
“By the time I was six I remember that thinking about being blind made me feel comfortable,” she told Barcroft TV.
As a teen Shuping said she began wearing thick, black sunglasses and walking with a cane. By the age of 20, she was even fluent in braille.
“I was ‘blind-simming’, which is pretending to be blind, but the idea kept coming up in my head and by the time I was 21 it was a non-stop alarm that was going off,” Shuping told Barcroft TV.
In 2006, Shuping found a psychologist who was willing to help her become blind. The psychologist began putting numbing drops in her eyes, followed by a couple of drops of drain cleaner.
“It hurt, let me tell you. My eyes were screaming and I had some drain cleaner going down my cheek burning my skin,” she told Barcroft TV. “But all I could think was ‘I am going blind, it is going to be okay.'”
Shuping’s mother and sister are no longer speaking to her.
She told Barcroft TV that she has no regrets and hopes to help other blind people live an independent life.
“I really feel this is the way I was supposed to be born, that I should have been blind from birth,” Shuping said. “When there’s nobody around you who feels the same way, you start to think that you’re crazy. But I don’t think I’m crazy, I just have a disorder.”

This woman intentionally made herself blind because she "felt" she should be blind.

What kind of doctor helps their patient become blind?
Oh that’s right the same type of doctor that will help a man cut off his .... to become more like a woman. Good grief!
That so-called psychologist should be in prison, and this poor, deluded woman should be in a mental ward.
Bring back mental institutions.

What kind of Psychologist helps blind their Patients?
There there to help the Patient and not enable them.
I’d be willing to bet this woman is either on SSDI (if she ever worked) or on SSI (for those with no creditable Social Security earnings. She’s likely on SNAP, gets EITC and eligible for Section 8 housing also. Also gets an extra income tax deduction because of being blind.
Instead of helping fulfill her delusion, the medical professional should have done what he could to get her committed.
Her family is rightfully justified in being furious.
Is she allowed to possess a firearm in that condition?
Dude should be in jail.

However, while she is happier living as a blind person, she doesn’t recommend what she went through. ‘Don’t go blind the way I did. I know there is a need but perhaps someday there will be treatment for it,’ she says.
‘People with BIID get trains to run over their legs, freeze dry their legs, or fall off cliffs to try to paralyse themselves. It’s very very dangerous. And they need professional help.’

Did she ever “dream” about having a severe mental illness?
Two things come to my mind about this woman. 1. Children of alcoholics typically blame themselves for everything and have a need to make an atonement, for even the mildest of offenses. 2. She needed people to feel sorry for her and went to the extreme to get it.
I’m thinking she may be the child of an alcoholic. They tend to want to pay a price to make up for what they think they did wrong.
