Washington (CNN)Donald Trump said Saturday that had teachers been armed at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, the deadly shooting there this week would not have been as tragic.
Trump has previously cited mental health issues, not guns, as the biggest cause of shootings in the U.S. But his comments on Saturday are his most extensive and emotionally charged about firearms since he launched his campaign in June, as he spoke about his personal gun ownership and elicited his biggest applause of the afternoon in discussing gun rights.
"By the way, it was a gun-free zone," he said at a campaign event in Franklin, Tennessee. "Let me tell you, if you had a couple teachers with guns in that room, you would have been a hell of a lot better off."

I agree that you are correct. I was originally responding to the poster who had concerns about a dozen armed students in a single class room engaging in a firefight with an attacker and the ensuing cross fire. Even with 4 of the victims being over 21 the chances that one of them was a CHL holder is slim because the percentage of CHL holders in the population is pretty low. The chances may increase in the future because more people may decide to become legal carriers after this latest incident as pointed out by an earlier poster.
The man who took 5 bullets trying to stop the shooter cold have stopped it too.
He has a carry permit - but didn’t have his weapon on him because it’s GUN FREE zone.
But you aren’t hearing anything about this man, are you? Why? Because those facts would be brought out.
Nor is anyone pointing out that obummer doesn’t seem to care about the 2,000 killed , so far this year, in Chicago - one of the strictest gun-free zones.

Guns cause global warming, global warming makes people go crazy, crazy people buy guns. It’s a vicious cycle.
We're never going to be able to stop every nut. But we can take measures to minimize the risk and damage. Armed students and teachers would be one way.
Others and I have already posted this years ago. I am beginning to suspect Trump is only trying to divide the conservative side to make sure Hillary wins. If so, he is the most despicable man on earth.

In your world it is better to be defenseless than it is to be prepared.
It was not that long ago that that not only were guns welcomed in schools but encouraged. ROTC units had real rifles. Many high schools had rifle and pistol teams. Cars and trucks in the parking lot would have weapons. And while I do not know for sure, I suspect many teachers had weapons.
I don’t remember any mass killing back then.
A gun free zone only informs the criminal there is no down side to using their gun.
Everyone in Israel is required to serve in the military. They have extensive military training.

And they should also have signs posted all the area “This School Is Armed”......
So arming the teacher would have proved worthless.
The military and police go through intense training on responding as a unit to threatening situations. Yet STILL there are “friendly fire” casualties.
I can imagine the disarray in a classroom with a bunch of young armed students randomly responding to a threat.
But one could make the argument that the pros outweigh the cons.
Looking at the percentage of the general population that have a CCW license, then the percentage of that that routinely carries, the odds of having a “a bunch of young armed students randomly responding to a threat.” ks laughable.
Likely a couple of armed citizens in a group of 30, if that.
It is the THREAT that the perp might encounter armed resistance that is the deterrent. This is why thugs are empowered on gunfree zones, and more hesitant where they aren’t sure that someone may shoot back.
These murderers are cowards, plain and simple.
A single armed person could have stopped it.
