For most people becoming blind would be a living nightmare - but for Jewel Shuping it was the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.
Jewel has Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), a condition in which able-bodied people believe they are meant to be disabled.
Her need to lose her sight was so strong that in 2006 she decided to blind herself - by having a sympathetic psychologist pour DRAIN CLEANER into her eyes.
According to Jewel, her fascination with blindness began early in childhood.
She said: "When I was young my mother would find me walking in the halls at night, when I was three or four years old.

Determined to make her dream a reality, Jewel found a psychologist willing to help her become blind ... The psychologist put in numbing eyedrops - acquired by Jewel during a special visit to Canada - and then a couple of drops of drain cleaner in each eye.
"But all I could think was 'I am going blind, it is going to be okay."...
Jewel, 30, from North Carolina, said: "When I woke up the following day I was joyful...
"I really feel this is the way I was supposed to be born, that I should have been blind from birth.
Jewel originally told her family it had been an accident, but they eventually found out the truth - causing both her mother and sister to cut contact.
"When there's nobody around you who feels the same way, you start to think that you're crazy. But I don't think I'm crazy, I just have a disorder."
Jewel is now sharing her story to help raise public awareness of BIID and to encourage people with the condition to seek professional help.

I know someone who wanted to be an amputee. They had their way (self inflicted) and are now without a leg.
And how much do taxpayers now have to pay for the rest of this woman’s life to cover her “disability”?
It is madness to assume that the mind can never be wrong, and that in any conflict between it and the body, that it is the latter that must be changed.
Maybe she was tired of looking at Hillary and Rosie O’D???

She never heard of a blindfold? Jail for the psychologist.
This has ongoing, insane implications for the practice of physical or psychological "healthcare." They're not allowed to discriminate in favor of "healthy."
This trend has to stop NOW --- for obvious reasons.
It seems the post-surgery people had high hopes that their lives would be soo-o-o- satisfyingly transformed when they switched their sex ---- things turned out disappointing --- they figured then that they now had no other options--- so they killed themselves.
I don't understand why they whole medical profession does not agree that this surgery in unethical. In fact it is serious medical malpractice.

Exactly. This is the most anti-body ideology in the world. And very much akin to the sex-change tragedy. I call it “tragedy” but actually it is a medical crime against the mentally ill.
I agree. On the other hand, you could have this profession absolutely destroy the rights of many people on a whim too.

Several years ago I researched some counseling.
Within the first few questions they asked if I owned guns.
I say yes and never went back.
As a gun owner I was put at risk by a law that was intended to help people.
Just plain dumb.
Ya beat me...that was my immediate thought.
I have blind and going blind friends that pray for eye sight.
So assuming she had some legit mental disorder...she could have attained her goal and helped two people by donation.
IF...some doctor did this...he/she needs to be disbarred. But somehow I think this is a made up story. I think she did it to herself an thought it would legitimize her actions. The story does mention that she got eye numbing drops herself.
Dang, I have that exact same disorder, we need to start a victim group and demand our right to not have to pay taxes to support deadbeats!

Both You and your psychologist have a “disorder”. You need to be in a mental institution and your doctor, sympathetic as he/she may be needs to be in prison for inflicting great bodily harm to you. Simply stated, you’re both nuts.
I thank God for my vision even though as I age, my eyesight gets a bit poorer...my beautiful wife, our son, the many sights I have been able to see and places to visit, the things I’ve been able to do, etc. have all been a blessing.
I suspect as you do, she did this herself and may be fishing a bit to see if there are “doctors” out there who would support self-mutilation to this degree.
He should’ve had her eyes removed and sold for cash. Then it would be ok. /s

We are awash in sickologists.
