THE MYSTERY OF POPE FRANCIS: WAS THERE A VATICAN COUP?
Powerline ^ | SEPTEMBER 27, 2015 | STEVEN HAYWARD

Posted on 09/27/2015 6:17:24 PM PDT by xzins

One thing that that has puzzled a lot of people since the selection of Pope Francis two years ago is how a left-leaning Pope could succeed two very serious conservative Popes—John Paul II and Benedict XVI—who you would have thought had stacked the ranks of the Cardinals with clergy that would perpetuate their theological and philosophical outlook. Was Benedict hounded out of office by some kind of internal Vatican scandal perhaps? Was there some ecclesiastical version of a coup?

There’s no evidence that I’m aware of—until now. Three days ago the National Catholic Register ran a very curious article about the contents of a newly published authorized biography of retired Belgian cardinal Godfried Danneels. The Register article reports:

Further serious concerns are being raised about Cardinal Godfried Danneels, one of the papal delegates chosen to attend the upcoming Ordinary Synod on the Family, after the archbishop emeritus of Brussels confessed this week to being part of a radical “mafia” reformist group opposed to Benedict XVI. . .

At the launch of the book in Brussels this week, the cardinal said he was part of a secret club of cardinals opposed to Pope Benedict XVI.

He called it a “mafia” club that bore the name of St. Gallen. The group wanted a drastic reform of the Church, to make it “much more modern”, and for Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio to head it. The group, which also comprised Cardinal Walter Kasper and the late Jesuit Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, has been documented in Austen Ivereigh’s biography of Pope Francis, The Great Reformer.

Over at The American Conservative, Rod Dreher has gone to the trouble of translating an Italian report that is even more curious:

The Italian Vaticanist Marco Tosatti writes (in Italian; I’ve modified the Google translation):

The election of Jorge Bergoglio was the result of secret meetings that cardinals and bishops, organized by Carlo Maria Martini, held for years in St. Gallen, Switzerland. This, according to Jürgen Mettepenningen et Karim Schelkens, authors of a newly published biography of the Belgian Cardinal Godfried Danneels, who calls the group of cardinals and bishops a “Mafia club”.
Danneels according to the authors, worked for years to prepare for the election of Pope Francis, which took place in 2013. Danneels, moreover, in a video recorded during the presentation of the book in Brussels, admits that he was part of a secret club of cardinals who opposed Joseph Ratzinger. Laughing, he calls it “a Mafia club that bore the name of St. Gallen”.
The group wanted a drastic reform of the Church, much more modern and current, with Jorge Bergoglio, Pope Francis, as its head. They got what they wanted. Besides Danneels and Martini, the group according to the book were part of the Dutch bishop Adriaan Van Luyn, the German cardinal Walter Kasper and Karl Lehman, the Italian Cardinal Achille Silvestrini and British Basil Hume, among others.

I underscore that this is not some secretly sourced claim, but it’s from an advance copy of Cardinal Danneels’ official biography, approved by himself.

This is the first confirmation of rumors that had been going around for years about Benedict being thwarted by a liberal conspiracy, one that eventually forced him out. These men — Danneels, Van Luyn, Kasper, Lehman, and Hume, at least — all preside over dying churches. And they killed the Benedict papacy.

This might explain a few things. . .

Very rarely.
My first impression was -perhaps his health may be failing and he didn’t want to lose the capacity to function as he witnessed with JPII.

But the longer he lives on, seemingly in good health does make me wonder what’s going on.

I’m not Catholic, but I’ve never heard such Socialist/commie words from a Pope before.

Cardinal Danneels’ Biographers Retract Comments on St. Gallen Group

“They say their quote in the original article in “Le Vif”, which had said “the election of Bergoglio was prepared in St. Gallen” by Cardinal Danneels and others, was a mistake made “after their approval and correction” of the quote.

Now they have stated that the “election of Bergoglio corresponded with the aims of St. Gallen, on that there is no doubt. And the outline of its program was that of Danneels and his confreres who had been discussing it for ten years.”

They stressed that, as this goal was not met in the 2005 conclave, and the St. Gallen club no longer convened after 2006, their original quote gave the false impression that it was a lobby group rather than an informal one. Cardinal Danneels this week referred to it as a kind of “mafia” club” http://www.ncregister.com/blog/edward-pentin/st.-gallen-group-not-a-lobby-group-say-authors/#ixzz3n2MEmkBL

The wall to wall coverage of this Pope was beginning to annoy me. MSM clearly likes his politics!!!!!

This young boy’s singing was the only inspirational moment.

No Pope will act to rid the clergy of these vermin.

Pope Benedict XVI removed more malefactors from the priesthood than any other pope. That included bishops as well as priests.

Bork was nominated by Reagan, after he was rejected ... Anthony Kennedy eventually got the seat.

Anthony Kennedy is no Robert Bork. Reagan certainly made some great nominations to the SCOTUS (Bork, Scalia).

Windswept House by (Fr.) Malachi Martin is a novel, but in an interview the author said that the book is approximately 80% true. There are sites that list who the characters in the book are in real life. It is quite an eye opening book.

Conservative catholics are very concerned. It should not be any surprise to you that Catholics are conservative and liberal, just like the rest of the populace. Those who are conservative see what is up here and are very troubled by it.

Don't let miscreants, incompetents and other liberals separate you from the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and from receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ and from receiving the certain forgiveness of your sins in the sacrament of Penance. If the Mass or priest at your parish does not nourish your soul, find a parish and priest who will. Try and find a Tridentine (Old Latin) Mass where the preaching will not be about globaloney warming or redistributing the wealth but will focus ion the Gospels, the Epistles and morality. Obtain and read a copy of Thomas a Kempis' Imitation of Christ which has been in continuous publications since the fifteenth century.

The sins of men are no reason to abandon the Truth. We are all sinners and Jesus Christ died for our sins, yours, mine and everyone else's. If He could endure scourging, crowning with thorns, carrying His cross, being crucified with nails through wrists and ankles to redeem anyone willing to accept that sacrifice, we can endure fools and idiots in high places and even molesters in the rectories. Jesus Christ promised to be with His Church to the very end of time on Earth. His promises are the most reliable ever made. The gates of hell will not prevail against us.

By attending Mass and receiving the Eucharist and having your sins formally forgiven, you are supporting Jesus Christ and His plan for you and not "this stuff." If you put a little money in the basket to defray the costs of Church building maintenance and the cost of heat and light, you are not supporting "this stuff." If you attend an unquestionably orthodox parish where the priests gladly obey their vows of celibacy, remember that Father has to eat. Don't be as concerned in other parishes.

May God bless you and yours and lead you back to faithful discipleship and His sacraments! You have free will. It is up to you, as it must be.

Also read Malachi Martin's The Final Conclave preferably before you read Windswept House. Also his The Keys of this Blood which gives the history of the Polish Roman Catholic Church that produced St. John Paul II. The Final Conclave (the 1978 Church that produced John Paul I and St. John Paul II as popes in rebellion against the depredations endured under John XXIII, Vatican II and Paul VI, then The Keys of This Blood and then Windswept House, a novel of St. John Paul II in the winter of his life and besieged by the forces which enrage us all.

Enjoy and God bless!

Scalia, Alito and Thomas refused to show up to hear his address to Congress. Roberts and Sandra Day O’Kennedy (diva of the Court or more simply on most controversies just The Court) have no need to be corrupted by Francis since they were corrupt before knowing of his existence.

I thoroughly agree that the molesters need to be arrested, prosecuted, convicted and jailed and that includes bishops as well as priests. A truly Catholic pope will likely succeed Francis in short order and will not say “Who am I to judge?” but act to root out this pestilence and let the chips fall where they may. God bless you and yours!

I’m adopting your post to cherry (#112) as a message to me, also. I’m involved with rcia, led by a woman who proudly calls herself progressive. She is an impediment to my journey, and I’m a disruptive voice to her. I am at the point I’m questioning the absolute certainty I once had that my home was with the Catholic faith and it’s tearing me apart.
