Bush: Wife meant to hide shopping spree from me

TALLAHASSEE -- Gov. Jeb Bush said Monday that his wife misled U.S. Customs officials about $19,000 in new clothing and jewelry she brought into the country because she didn't want him to know how much she had spent on her five-day Paris shopping trip.

Forced to explain his wife's actions at the Atlanta airport Thursday, Bush said Monday that the episode had disrupted their family life. His wife, Bush said, feels "horrible about this."

"It was a difficult weekend at our house," Bush said.

On Friday, the Bushes disclosed that Columba Bush had paid a $4,100 fine and was briefly detained by Customs agents for failing to declare merchandise when she arrived at Hartsfield International Airport. With that, the low profile enjoyed by the governor's quiet wife ended. "Shop 'til you drop," read a headline Saturday in the Bush's new hometown paper, the Tallahassee Democrat.

In his first public remarks about the Customs fine, Bush on Monday declined to specify exactly what his wife had purchased, and he tried to guard her privacy.

Heb!: “She broke the law and lied to me, but vote for me anyway! There’s NO WAY that kind of thing would happen again with ME in the White House!”

Old Family Scandals May Haunt Jeb Presidential Run

If Jeb Bush decides to run for president, GOP leaders are warning that he may face “hurtful” questions about past family scandals.

In 1999, while he was governor of Florida, his wife, Columba, was fined for declaring only $500 worth of goods to U.S. Customs on her return from Paris, where she actually made close to $20,000 in purchases.

Three years later, his daughter Noelle, was arrested at age 24 for alleged prescription fraud while trying to buy a tranquilizer, Xanax.

In 2005, his son, Jeb Jr., then 21, was arrested in Texas for public intoxication and resisting arrest.

Politico reported Wednesday that, as “ the buzz picks up” about whether George W. Bush’s younger brother will run for the White House, donors are questioning whether he is prepared to face “new questions” about the old scandals.

$19,000? Really?

I don’t think I’ve spent that much in 5 years on my whole family of 11!

That information will bring Jebbie back to earth with a thud.

I'll have to remember this the next time I go to Paris for a 5-day shopping trip, and then under-report the value of my purchases to customs!

These freakin' political-class a**holes make me sick.

The rich are different from you and me

LIFE at the bottom is nasty, brutish and short. For this reason, heartless folk might assume that people in the lower social classes will be more self-interested and less inclined to consider the welfare of others than upper-class individuals, who can afford a certain noblesse oblige. A recent study, however, challenges this idea. Experiments by Paul Piff and his colleagues at the University of California, Berkeley, reported this week in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, suggest precisely the opposite. It is the poor, not the rich, who are inclined to charity.

I am not a Bush fan but since when do we start looking at family.....I thought it was off limit. I remember when they tried to bring up Palin’s family there was outrage on here. Leave the family out of it and I mean all families.
