Cleaned of encrustations, CSS Hunley becomes a real submarine
Stars and Stripes ^ | 9/17/15 | Ruane

Posted on 09/18/2015 6:20:27 AM PDT by pabianice

For more than a century, the CSS Hunley rested at the bottom of the ocean just outside Charleston harbor, its crew entombed, its hull gradually encased in hardening encrustations.

When it was raised 15 years ago off South Carolina, it looked more like a barnacled sea monster than the world's first operational submarine, sunk in battle during the winter of 1864.

The remains of its eight sailors were removed in 2001, but research has continued, and Thursday, a conservation team announced that experts have now removed more than half a ton of the encrustations.

The result: the Hunley has much of the look and menace of a modern sub and is clearly the ancestor of the U-boat and the nuclear submarine of today.

I saw a life-size-ish replica at Andrews AFB Air Show about 20 years ago, when I got my "Raise the Hunley" t-shirt.

Similar:

The mechanicals are very simple, so "working" could be done, but I'd advise scuba gear for the crew.

The author Clive Cussler was responsible for finding the Hunley.

They were using electrolysis to remove corrosion and barnacles as well as other growth. It is a very slow process that in this case took years and it does not harm the parent metal.

I used to use the same process to restore motorcycle tanks for classic cycles that had internal corrosion and were beyond use. When finished the inside looked like a brand new tank. I actually found out how to do it after researching how artifacts from the ocean bottom, (coins, jewelry, religious items, etc) are cleaned.

All she needs is a diesel engine and a decent set of batteries. Oh, and some reliable torpedoes...

But you can clearly see the dawn of a new age of naval warfare in her design.

How soon will the Hunley be called a “Symbol of racism” and demands be to remove it from public view?

Clive Cussler hired guys who found CSS Alabama in addition to the Hunley.

After announcing the finds Officials and Authorities who never gave shat about locating them and never lifted a pinkie or spent a dollar or franc in the effort leapt in to drive Cussler and company from the locations. Or give him any credit.

The book is called Sea Hunters. Clive wrote two books about him and his NUMA crews searching for historic ship wrecks.

The story about the Hunley is in the first book.
