America’s Legal Order Begins to Fray
WSJ ^ | Sept. 13, 2015 | HEATHER MAC DONALD

A virulent antipolice campaign has made police officers reluctant to do their jobs. The media amplify that message on a daily basis.

“I’m deliberately not getting involved in things I would have,” a NY City officer says. “I won’t get out of my car for a reasonable-suspicion stop; only if there’s a violent felony committed in my presence.”

Violent crime has surged. Homicides up 76% in Milwaukee, 60% in St. Louis, and 56% in Baltimore compared with the same period in 2014.

“There’s a total lack of respect out there for the police,” says a New York sergeant. “Perps feel more empowered to carry guns.”

In Cincinnati, a riot broke out when police arrived at a drive-by shooting scene where a 4-year-old girl had been shot in the head Bystanders cursed at officers arresting suspects at the scene.

During demonstrations in Ferguson, Mo., 18-year-old Tyrone Harris opened fire at police officers and was shot and wounded by police in response. A crowd pelted the cops with frozen water bottles and rocks, destroyed three police cars and damaged businesses. “We’re ready for war,” protesters chanted.

In Birmingham, Ala., an officer was beaten unconscious with his own gun. There was gloating on social media. The officer later said that he had refrained from using force for fear of a media backlash.

Officers are challenged in their most basic efforts to render aid. A New York cop said he was trying to extricate a woman pinned under an overturned car when a bystander stuck his cellphone camera into the officer’s face. “You can’t tell me what to do,” the bystander replied when asked to move to the sidewalk. “A few years ago, I would have taken police action. Now I know it won’t end well for me or the police department.”

[[“There’s a total lack of respect out there for the police,” says a New York sergeant. “Perps feel more empowered to carry guns.” ]] I posted this in another thread- and it sums up why our legal system is in decline, and why criminals and blatant sinners are now becoming bolder, and why we ARE losing our freedoms and security: “Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself. There was never a democracy that did not commit suicide.” John Adams, Letter, April 15, 1814 “But a Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever.” John Adams “We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other.” John Adams

First, the GOOD news: Though still disturbing, the number of police officers killed each year has fallen back to mid-1960s levels. Most of THOSE lamentable 60s deaths were the result of actions by criminals suspects or really bad people during law enforcement efforts at apprehensions.

Now, the BAD news: We are seeing something very, very different today. We are witnessing the random executions of cops by those who appear to have been animated by the unfortunate race-baiting and other efforts to disrupt our culture by certain members of the political class and the consequent break-down in the rule of law. This is Third World, banana republic stuff most Americans have traditionally rejected.

The drift away from the traditional, Constitutional American ethos that the duty of the police is to protect and serve and the ongoing militarization of the police is very disturbing to those who know and understand the tragedy that sort of activity has brought upon other nations. If not curtailed, the dangerous idea that the police and the decent, taxpaying, law-abiding citizens whose resources pay for that protection and service are somehow enemies will end very badly. There is a growing sense in some quarters that the “service” the police increasingly provide is the “protection”of the elitist oligarchs by controlling and suppressing those these elites consider an existential threat to their power and control.

Normal distribution curves tell us that every barrel of apples will contain x number of bad apples. You good officers who try only to do the best job you can and are NOT on some uniform, badge and pistol power trip enjoyed by some of your colleagues know who the abusive power trippers in your department are. It is in our interest – but especially in the interest of you good, dedicated officers who may some day become targets of random, unjustified assassination attempts – to identify and do what you can to get the abusive power-trippers out of your departments.

And it is incumbent on the managers of those departments to attempt to prevent those individuals from simply joining other departments by giving inquiring agencies honest evaluations of those dismissed officers. Let them take jobs where they do not carry a gun and badge and the authority of the state. Because the uniform makes you guys an easy target, you should think about that before you close ranks in that thinning blue line in a misguided effort to shield the abusive power-trippers.

I believe the increase in street and other common crime is a result of the real disrespect for law in the very highest levels of our system all the way up to state capitols, Pennsylvania Avenue, Capitol Hill and the very courts themselves. After years of it, some citizens, who may already be disposed to lawless acts finally say “What the hell, if they can get away with it, why shouldn’t I?”

One final note. Can anyone remember when the term “Police State” conjured a happy, warm, comforting feeling?

Neither can I! So let’s do all we can to stop before we get there.

PS: Before you attempt to peg me as a cop hater, the Best Man at my wedding many years ago was my Uncle Bob, a 30 year police officer/detective. And my only sister is married to a retired cop!

Like the tennis player who got assaulted by an NYPD who tackled him and would’ve beat him up had not a retired cop stopped him. Yet even though this cop assaulted a decent, innocent man, there’s still too many people willing to explain it away as ‘justifed’.

I never read that bit about a retired cop. Are you sure? Meanwhile Blake the fake is in it for the money. It will be easier to cash in now due to the apologies he got from top police and NYC officials. http://www.wsj.com/articles/nypd-releases-video-of-tennis-star-james-blakes-arrest-1442004715

How is Blake a “fake”?

He was criminally assaulted. The video of the assault says it all. You might want to watch it and ask how you’d feel in the same circumstance.

And here’s a reference to the retired (GOOD) cop who intervened:

It will never change. It’s how business has been done in South America for centuries. Why some “conservatives” want us to turn into the legal equivalent of Venezuela I can’t say.

Valid observations. As police depts dumb down entrance regs they’re going to get badge heavy miscreants. Here in Tulsa the slogan used to be “Protect and Serve.” Now it’s, “If you’re fat, lazy and stupid, we need you.”

From your link it seems all the retired cop did was to get Blake released more quickly from the police detaining him. Mr Retired Cop did not stop a beating.
