I’m not sure I agree completely with Ben Carson on that – as far as I’ve heard, the component price of produce having to do with labor is about 10%. So DOUBLING the wages you pay someone would only mean a 10% raise in the price of tomatoes. Would Americans be willing to pick tomatoes if they were paid $15-$20 an hour? I have a feeling they would.

I was disgusted when George Bush said something similar.
Ben Carson was a hard worker growing up, but now he is out of touch with a lot of Americans. We should make it easier for people on welfare to take jobs without losing all their benefits right away.

I like Carson but this made me cringe. Free stuff destroys the human spirit, work ethic and desire to better ones self. Ben needs to really come to grips with that.
I’m ok withthat as long as the immigrants are Ukrainian women who want to do the hard work of neing married and having families.
Just doing the job American women wont do.
Dr. Carson just insulted every American who’s a welder a truck driver a repair person a doctor a nurse a lab tech a maid a cook a landscaper a garbage pick up person etc and etc.
Americans do hard labor jobs.
Now if he proposed no welfare to guest workers we’ll see how ready they are to come to this country.
If only his name was Donald Trump. Then he could say whatever he wants and say he was joking the next day.
I despise any politician that ignores the fact that many Americans worked these jobs (and raised families doing so) for generations; the salaries of these jobs are kept artificially low because regardless of what skills are involved, supply & demand would drive the wages higher until Americans would do them again. The fact is employers have been flouting the laws of supply & demand with our open borders (using LEGAL immigrants).
How does Carson explain all of the Americans that showed up at the meat-processing plants are the bracero raids? When reporters asked the Americans why they were lining up for the now-open jobs, the response was “We were the people who used to work here until the company replaced us with Mexicans...”.
“Guest Worker” (Brazeros) began in WWI when most of our men were at war in Europe. Along came WWII and the Brazeros program was used again. The farms needed tending and the Mexicans were more than happy to help out for dollars. Word got out about life in America and spread among the villages (mostly inhabited by mixed Indian people). Pappa came here to work, and we hired him. He’d go home at Christmas and sometimes bring his family back....and that is how the trickling stream of Mexicans became a flood.
When I was a young man I was operating a jackhammer 10 hours a day horizontally breaking culvert walls for 3.50/hr. Within 3 years I was the construction superintendent at the same construction company. Ben knows that story. Why he is ignoring it is beyond me.
Take away their welfare checks, and see what happens.
In place of that would be the H2A Ag worker visa and the H2B Non-Ag worker visa, which are seasonal visas.
In the last attempt at immigration reform(2006-07), these two visas were reformed to make them more usable. Additionally, a 3rd temp worker visa was created with a longer term of 2 years with the possibility to renew it 2 more years.
The last try at immigration reform in 2007 was killed by the unions who got 5 GOPers to back them in getting a 5 year sunset clause on the guest worker programs added to the legislation
