Obama warns Russia on military moves in Syria

Fort Meade (United States) (AFP) - US President Barack Obama said Friday that Russia's decision to send military advisors and equipment to Syria extended a strategy "doomed to failure," and could kill off already stagnant peace efforts.

Obama said that Russia's decision to ramp up its military presence in war-torn Syria represented a "doubling-down" of Moscow's support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

US officials say Russia has sent ships, armored personnel carriers and naval infantry to the country in recent weeks, a move which Obama said showed Assad was worried his grip on power is slipping.

"The strategy that they are pursuing right now, doubling down on Assad, I think is a big mistake," Obama said at an event marking the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

"We are going to be engaging Russia to let them know that you can't continue to double down on a strategy that is doomed to failure."

If Assad were still in charge of the entire country there would not be 4 million refugees headed toward Europe....and all other liberal Western countries.

I hope he doesn’t embarrass us again with another thin red line.

Also, who does Obama think he is? Didn’t he almost seek military action against Syria? Hasn’t the Obama administration been supplying arms to terrorists attacking Syria?

I just believe our boy Hussein sort of has a double standard.

There may be something to his warning. Over the last seven years Obama has become expert in strategies doomed to failure.

If the Russians attack ISIS, will Obama rush to the defence of ISIS?

Why do we even have to ask such a question of an American President??

I'm not so sure Iraq wouldn't in some way be better of with Saddam. I know Iran was better off with the Shah. Sometimes, you have to deal with the lesser of multiple possible evils.

Yup, a smart man realizes that sometimes an unpleasant compromise is the best choice.

And then again sometimes only swift and brutal war will suffice.

It takes brilliance to know which road to take.

Glad I will never have to make such decisions...

If Obama won’t or can’t take down the ISIS then let Putin try. The disgusting inhuman acts of genocide and sex slavery by this group have gone on long enough.

If Obama is willing to put boots on the ground and take out both Assad and the Islamic extremists than that is preferable but the Russian option is favorable to allowing Islamic extremists to rule Syria and exterminate their Christians and other minorities.

I’m afraid I’m lapsing into senility. I’ve read the article again and again. I cannot see where a ‘warning’ was issued. I found an opinion and a strangely tortuous 3rd person admonition but nothing I would categorize as a warning much less a threat. If that is what passes for a warning in oblahblah speak, then Putin is free to do as he pleases with impunity.
