Donald Trump just eviscerated a new [as in,"latest"] GOP rival
Business Insider ^ | September 10, 2015 | Colin Campbell

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is now tearing into one of the rivals he long declined to criticize: retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

In a CNN interview on Thursday, the real-estate magnate attacked Carson's religiosity, persona, qualifications for the presidency, views on abortion — and even his medical record.

"He was a doctor, perhaps an OK doctor, by the way. You should check that out too. We're not talking about a great [doctor]. He was an OK doctor," Trump said.

As a doctor, Carson drew national attention at John Hopkins "by conducting a succession of operations that had never been performed successfully," according to The New York Times, "most famously planning and managing the first separation of conjoined twins connected through major blood vessels in the brain."

Trump said he was criticizing Carson because the retired brain surgeon took a shot at him the day before. CNN reported that Carson was asked at an event how he was different from Trump, and he responded by comparing their faith in God.

"Probably the biggest thing — I've realized where my success has come from and I don't in anyway deny my faith in God," replied Carson, a member of the Seventh-day Adventist church. "By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life, and that's a very big part of who I am. I don't get that impression with him."

Some political observers have suggested that Trump could struggle to win over evangelical voters because of his casual public approach to his own religion. For example, Trump has said he doesn't seek forgiveness from God and referred to Holy Communion as eating "my little cracker" and drinking "my little wine."

What about collecting trophy wives, is that a New York thing? And could he get another one without his wealth? I wonder if he’ll get an American one next time.

I have various issues with Carson, but would not deny for a moment that he is a brilliant doctor and a very admirable person. Bonehead move by Trump.

If Donald unwinds - mainly because he can’t help himself - I hope Ted and Ben stay far away from the spotlight, then, swoop in and say the right things. Those right things are not talking about Trump, but instead, jobs, healthcare, immigration and such. I.e., saving the country and the Constitution.

Trump is pulling an Alinsky.

When he attacks, he tries to get under the skin of his opponent

His strategy is to attack where his opponent is most sensitive. It's not for public consumption. We know Carson is a brilliant surgeon. Trump knows Carson is a brilliant surgeon.

Trump's perception is that however humble Carson may appear, he is hiding a secret pride about his work as a surgeon. Ergo, attack at that point.

Carson just said the wrong things about immigration. He is a big supporter of amnesty and his claims regarding deportation revealed that he is at best clueless.

The rising popularity of Trump despite the fact that he is coarse and egotistical is a reflection of the absolute frustration many have for the Washington political elite, personified by Jeb Bush, the ‘my turn’ favorite of the RNC.

We’ve tried the humble approach (G.W. Bush- who left office with a job approval rating in the 20’s) and it usually fails. Dr. Carson is a nice man, obviously devout and indisputably an excellent surgeon. Trump was foolish to attack him on his medical abilities.

Carson’s quiet manner of speaking is hardly inspiring and Trump had a point there. Unlike most, Trump is not afraid to criticize Carson just because Carson is black. Trump was also correct that, although Carson is well-liked, he will not be our next president.

Yes; this was disappointing.

I like Trump, but this was not needed; and not true.

I’d rather see Trump conduct himself as a man who can honor another man for his very obvious accomplishments.

So now Trump is an example of humility?

Trump's the most humble man in the world, just ask him.

Don’t forget that beam in your eye now!

Always astounded how people so freely make declarations about someone else’s faith when they know as much about what’s in a person’s heart as I do: ZIP

He somehow seems to be exempt from the normal PC rules that other candidates are forced to observe. People seem to expect him to act Trumpish and when he does they just shrug.

I have no idea how he pulls it off while being opposed by the MSM 24/7

Go Trump!

More wisecracks, we need more wisecracks....

He says something like "Just look at that face!" (Fiorina) And people think... "She is pretty homely at that"

Normal folk understand that it's often funny to poke fun at someone you oppose... just remember all the gleeful jabs taken at Nancy Pelosi's hideous visage right here on FR

I'd have omitted any criticism of Carson's medical skills...but what do I know. IMO Carson has made some ridiculous policy statements of late.. I'd have stuck to making wisecracks about those.

It wasn’t Trump responding. It was Trump making a personal attack and being completely wrong.

Trump is as much of narcissist as bam bam.

Marla Maples was American as apple pie. At least Trump marries his girlfriends. Ivana was a citizen and I’m sure this one is a citizen as well.

Clinton just rapes women and leaves them with an ice pack. Obama just hangs out at Man’s Country. But Republicans are still looking for the perfect, wrapped-in-cellophane candidate. Not going to happen.

I'm really surprised at the people here who don't understand snark and hyperbole.

A man like Trump doesn't become a business success by not realizing potential in someone like Carson.

Carsons greatness at being a surgeon is well known and obvious.

Carson poked the bear with a stick and the grizzly swung back.
