I am 37 years old, and I don't remember my mom. In fact, I know very little about her. I don't know her birthday. I don't know what made her laugh. I don't know what made her cry. What I do know is that on Sept. 8, 1979, she committed suicide with a gun that her father — my grandfather — had given her despite the fact that she suffered from depression and had previously attempted suicide with pills as a teenager.
She died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, alone in her car on the side of a road. She left behind an infant who would never feel his mom's embrace, never know her voice, her smell. An infant who would grow into a man searching for answers to why his mother would chose to end her own life with a gun.
For most of my life, I have struggled with two questions: Why didn't I mean enough for my mom to push through her depression, and why did she do this to me? Neither question has an answer — nor would any answer bring her back or make this never-ending pain and heartache go away.
So for the past few years I have decided to refocus my energy to searching for a different answer. The question now on my mind is: What do we as a society do to prevent 58 Americans from committing suicide with a gun every day?

She could just as easily taken more pills, slit her wrists, closed the garage door with the car running, or jumped off a bridge. If someone want’s to snuff themselves they can find a way.

Something stinks to high heaven here. She doesn’t know her mother’s birthday? Has she asked? Are questions about Mom taboo? Why?
Why wasn’t I enough for my mother to live for? Because mental illness does that to people. Why don’t we try treating that instead?
Again, I am struck by the “Me!” me, me, me. Boohoo poor me.
Why can’t she study psychology and find a cure for depression as the result of her childhood?
But no, the solution is always, and only, to ban guns.
I’ll bet the reality is far different from the story here.
Sorry, Ms. Penebaker (what the Hell kind of name is Khary?); but the fact that your grandfather and mother were nuts doesn’t allow you and your ilk to abridge my natural right to liberty and self-defense.
If only we had an iron-fisted dictator who promised to put an end to suicides...
Probably. She knew he’d be a whiny butt liberal and she couldn’t bear the thought of it. She dreamed of having a son but got it instead.

Why doesn’t he know her birthday? The answer to that question might be revealing. I never knew a grandparent other than my maternal grandfather. My other grandfather and both grandmothers died before my birth but I can tell you their birthdays, I can’t recite them from memory but I have the information on hand.

That is certainly true, I have never tried to intentionally kill myself but I have come within a whisker of doing it without even trying on more than one occasion.
She is the one promoting gun violence. Over and over the FACTS prove arming the community REDUCES crime. She is trying to disarm the community.

Along with everything else that happened in the same century apparently.
Treat the depression, not the object.
