Although I don't know where he is, Mahoney is still alive -- he turned his position over to a hispanic bishop. Believe that was in the wake of the scandal where he covered up for all those priests that abused children and cost the church serious $$$ in settlements.

That “Hispanic bishop” (Archbishop Gomez of LA) is actually very good and very conservative. He was passed over for cardinal, in fact, because he didn’t toe the Mahony/Francis line. Believe me, he’s not the one Mahony would have picked.

The big question in my mind is why Mahony, just shy of 80 (non-voting age), somebody who bankrupted his diocese because of his protection of homosexual youth-abusing clergy (and was spared revelation of his own involvement because he was a leftist and the press protected him), and somebody who destroyed respect for Catholicism in Los Angeles, is swanning around Rome and appears to be a bosom buddy of PF.
