Medical marijuana does well in national study
Wyoming Tribune Eagle ^ | Sep 02, 2015 | Mike Hinton

The National Cancer Institute recently released its report on medical marijuana. The overview of their conclusion is, THC (the active ingredient in marijuana) caused a 45 percent reduction in bladder cancer, remission in breast and liver cancer and more.

They have determined that there is no lethal dose of marijuana. And addictive potential is considerably lower than any other medicine available.

Among their findings, they have found that cannabis is not associated with adverse pulmonary function and does not cause lung cancer or any aerodigestive tract cancers. Cannabis does not cause other types of cancer either.

They found cannabis has great anti-tumoral activity. Through their testing they have determined that cannabis is more effective than conventional antiemetics (drugs that ease nausea). And inhaled marijuana was more effective in chemo-induced nausea than any other currently available treatment.

Some of their other findings are: Cannabis appetite increase at 75 percent compared to the most effective medicine that has a 49 percent increase; weight increase at 11 percent compared to the most effective current medicine that has a 3 percent increase.

In opiate resistant cancer pain, marijuana had significant pain intensity relief, substantial analgesic effects, antiemetic effects and appetite simulation.

They also proved THC to be more effective then codeine. Some 10 mg of THC was more effective then 60 mg of codeine. There was no increase of the THC dose needed in long-term pain management.

Inhaled THC was shown to be more effective in neuropathic pain than current medicine. It also showed improved sleep quality and sense of well being and less anxiety.

These are just some of the findings of the National Cancer Institute. (http://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/cam/hp/cannabis-pd)

The federal government has made it so no state can be prosecuted for implementing a medical marijuana program. That is why the 23 states (and our nation’s capital) with medical marijuana programs are still around.

In a world where we hand out opioids like they’re skittles and have the audacity to be shocked that heroin usage is going up it’s funny how many people get worked up about the possibility that some people “enjoy” their marijuana based painkillers. Also the pill form doesn’t work well, it’s too strong, it’s not as easy to control dosage, and it’s hard on the stomach which completely negates the anti-nausea properties of pot.

There is a terpene in MJ that actually kills a certain type of cancer.

Totally agree. I have MS, and many MS patients, who live where it’s legal, report great relief in pain and spasticity.

What do those of us who don’t live in marijuana legal states do? We take a handful of pills, each with it’s own set of side effects, many addictive.

I have an implanted pump that drops anti-spasticity meds on my spine because I can’t take a high enough oral dose to handle my spasticity....hospital bill from the intial surgery was $100,000, and there have been other surgeries related to issues with the pump, including MRSA infection, and migration of the pump and/or catheter. I’s a life threatening situation if the pump ever malfunctions (due to sudden withdrawal from the med.)

The ITB pump does the job, but those in marijuana legal states say they get more than adequate relief from their spasticity from eating or smoking MJ and are taking no other meds. There are strains of marijuana (Charlotte’s Web) being used for epilepsy and other diseases that contain very low THC, so you don’t get high, but your medical issue is remedied.

There is a place for medical marijuana...and the weakest argument of all is that it shouldn’t be used because it’s addictive. Many drugs a doctor prescribes for an MS patient are addictive (benzodiazepenes probably lead the pack)...but if you have a disease where there is no cure, and one will have to deal with the disabilities and pain for the rest of one’s life, what’s the big deal about addiction...I’ve never quite understood that.

Marinol is not a “pill form of marijuana”.

There is no such thing as a pill form of marijuana.

Marijuana has about 12 major components (out of about 80) and they are often times agonists or antagonists of one another.

This complex interplay is not het fully understood.

There is a component in MJ that has analgesic properties like Advil or aspirin.

I just got back from a trip to Colorado. Amazing how many “medical marijuana” clinics there are in tiny towns like Breckenridge. Who would have thought there were so many sick skiers...

To be fair, my bong is a 3 chamber bypass in a tasteful clear glass with green accents, never used once.

Vaping is healthier. Bongs are for kids.

Plenty of evidence for the antitumor effects of cannabinoids at http://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/cam/hp/cannabis-pdq#link/_26_toc.
