Syria builds park in honor of North Korea founder Kim Il Sung

A Syrian official at the opening ceremony praised Kim as a "historic ruler and leader, famous for his struggle to liberate and build his country."

DAMASCUS, Syria, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Syria's government paid tribute to North Korea founder Kim Il Sung during a ceremony for a new park in Damascus named in his honor.

As battles raged between the Islamic State and rebels in southern Damascus, Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad and North Korean envoys attended the opening ceremony Monday for a 9,000-square-meter park that was built on top of recently bulldozed homes, Al Jazeera reported.

Mikdad praised Kim as a "historic ruler and leader, famous for his struggle to liberate and build his country."

"For this reason, he deserves to be honored in Syria," the Syrian official said.

Mikdad also said North Korea has stood with Syria against terrorism. The Independent reported Mikdad said in statement North Korea represented an example for Syria in its own civil war and the North Korean envoy said he was confident Syria could "achieve the final victory in its fight against aggression."

N. Korea firmly sides with Syria, and naturally against ISIS. They have been very close. N. Koreans helped Syrians build a nuclear reactor, which Israeli airforce destroyed. If the situation in N. Korea were better, N. Korea could have even dispatched ground troops to fight alongside Syrians.

N. Korea and Syria are commiserating, while beset by problems from all sides.

Interesting, no comments.

I’ll say it - axis of evil - no good choices, short-term nor long-term here.

I'll comment. The enemy of your enemy may not be your friend, but he can be useful.

It is extremely unfortunate that Vladimir Putin sees the issues with ISIS more clearly than Barack Obama. On the other hand, if the old Soviet-era allies can do a better job of defeating ISIS in Syria and Iraq than the Soviets did of defeating Islamic radicals in Afghanistan, it's hard to argue that they'll be doing something useful.

Defeating ISIS would be a good thing. What scares me is what will happen next if the North Koreans and the Russians and the Iranians actually win in Syria and Iraq. What message will that send to others in the Middle East who see Assad winning by seeking the aid of people like that?

Russia has had interests in Syria for decades. I can understand them trying to back up the Assad regime. Same for Iran. Also, I know that North Korea has had quiet ties with Syria for a long time. But the open and public involvement of North Korea could signal a desire by the boy-dictator to assert himself and his multi-million-man army on the world stage.

I'll ask again: What will happen if they win? Are we prepared for a world in which the Middle East becomes the playground of Russians and North Koreans, with Chinese money and technology in the background running the oilfields and buying Sunni silence about Iran through purchasing lots of oil?

If situations in NK were better, N. Korean regime would have sent its own troops to fight alongside Assad’s troops. They cannot afford to send their crack troops, who are badly needed to safeguard the regime.

Axis of Evil cleanup in the Syrian aisle.

Look for Nork troops to enter after the Chinese.

They’re coming in through Syria but their real objective is Iraq with the world’s 2nd largest oil reserves.

The US: Pie in the Sky dumbass altruist fantasies of diplomacy through being hip and likable.

Rest of the World: Old School diplomacy of breaking stuff, killing people and taking whatever they can.
