ABC News ^ | September 1, 2015 | Benjamin Bell and Ali Weinberg

Donald Trump, apparently assuming he will secure the White House, tweeted on Monday evening that he would reverse the decision announced by President Obama to change the name of Alaska's Mount McKinley back to the traditional name Denali, saying it is an affront to the Buckeye State.

Your welcome.

Some certainly won’t agree. But I suspect most of them don’t understand the history of the naming in the first place.

I was born and raised in Ohio. I still have family living in Carnation City (obscure McKinley reference).

I lived in Alaska for 4 years. As I learned the history of the naming of the Mountain, I could no longer call it McKinley. It has been Denali in my family’s heart for years now. Over our mantle is a large photograph of Denali by a local artist we knew. We visited Denali Park nearly twice a year. We would enter the state lottery to win a right to drive it at the end of the season, our last year we won (along with ~400 others).

Surely, this is one case where state and local preferences should prevail. If Alaskans for whatever reason of their own want to think of Bolshaya Gora as Denali, fine. The rest of the country has enough problems to deal with. And anyway, we can still go on calling it Mt. McKinley just to irritate our Northern neighbors.

There was much sentiment about the assassination of President McKinley who died from an anarchist's bullet, September 14. 1901. The first name for Mt McKinley was given Densmore’s Mountain after the gold prospector, Frank Densmore. Another gold prospector, William Dickey named the peak after William McKinley who was a candidate for President. It was William McKinley who was for the gold standard and Dickey did not like the silver minors who supported William Jennings Bryan. Bryan wanted the silver standard. After McKinley's assassination, the effort by Ohio lawmakers to venerate McKinley's sacrifice to country came to getting a formal declaration by Congress to name the peak after him. It got instituted into law and signed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1917. I am wondering what kind of uproar would have came if the peak was named Mt. Lincoln? I am wondering when the next foot drops and my beloved Mt. Rainier is changed to Mt. Təqʷúʔbəʔ ("the mother of waters"). Can't pronounce it? How about the name of the Washington city, Puyallup? People look at you as an idiot if you can't pronounce the name "Puyallup." As much as the Alaskans love the name "Denali," Americans have known the peak as Mt. McKinley for over 100 years--since that lone gold prospector named it after his hero. Can't we continue to venerate William McKinley with its name?

It’s a profile in courage since only 20 percent support the McKinley name. Good that Donald will stand up for principle instead of pandering.

No new information in it for me.

It will always be Denali for the son of Ohio.

My beloved Mt Rainier which I see everyday ( when the weather is nice, certainly not today) should keep the name Mt Rainier. A small group of people want the name changed, I think to Mt Tahoma.
If the majority of people in Washington state wanted the name changed, then the name should be changed. I don't forsee that happening because everyone calls it Mt Rainier. Obama would have serious trouble if he unilaterally changed it.He would be changing it without the support of the people in the state.
However, in Alaska, Alaskans have always called the mountain Denali. Ohio should not be able to impose their name on another state. The reason probably why it was never changed, (after Alaska petitioned Congress to change it), is Ohio's political clout.
We all know Congress is corrupt, votes matter to them, and they all want Ohio votes. They don't care about Alaska. They only care about themselves. Therefore, since Alaska could not get a fair shake from Congress, this is the only way they could change the name.
I like the name Puyallup. It took me years to be able to say it. It differentiates the locals from the newbies.

Donald, IF elected president, should declare “What the previous president (and I use the word loosely) did was ILLEGAL and so the name change is not valid- the name remains Mt McKinley- We are a nation of laws, and the previous president (and again I use the word loosely) BROKE the law repeatedly, and should have been impeached, but because our congress and senate and house was made up of pansies, no one stood up to the previous bully president (once again, using the word loosely)

I have been suggesting we give a second name to Death Valley, “Death Valley (Mount Obama) - lowest point in America”
