There was much sentiment about the assassination of President McKinley who died from an anarchist's bullet, September 14. 1901. The first name for Mt McKinley was given Densmores Mountain after the gold prospector, Frank Densmore. Another gold prospector, William Dickey named the peak after William McKinley who was a candidate for President. It was William McKinley who was for the gold standard and Dickey did not like the silver minors who supported William Jennings Bryan. Bryan wanted the silver standard. After McKinley's assassination, the effort by Ohio lawmakers to venerate McKinley's sacrifice to country came to getting a formal declaration by Congress to name the peak after him. It got instituted into law and signed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1917. I am wondering what kind of uproar would have came if the peak was named Mt. Lincoln? I am wondering when the next foot drops and my beloved Mt. Rainier is changed to Mt. Təqʷúʔbəʔ ("the mother of waters"). Can't pronounce it? How about the name of the Washington city, Puyallup? People look at you as an idiot if you can't pronounce the name "Puyallup." As much as the Alaskans love the name "Denali," Americans have known the peak as Mt. McKinley for over 100 years--since that lone gold prospector named it after his hero. Can't we continue to venerate William McKinley with its name?
