Pope to allow all priests to forgive abortion during Holy Year

Pope Francis will give all priests discretion during the Roman Catholic Church's upcoming Holy Year to formally forgive women who have had abortions, in the Argentine pontiff's latest move towards a more open and inclusive church.

In Church teaching, abortion is such a grave sin that those who procure or perform it incur an automatic excommunication. Usually only designated clergy and missionaries can formally forgive abortions.

But from Dec.8 to Nov. 26, during an extraordinary Holy Year or "Jubilee" on the theme of mercy announced by Pope Francis in March, all priests will be able to do so, he said in a letter published on Tuesday by the Vatican.

People should stop being surprised by this crappy pope’s proclamations. A leftist is a leftist is a leftist.

Allow me to repost what I posted on another related thread when a similar question as yours came up:

A given “average” priest does not have the ability to forgive the sin of abortion. That is usually reserved for a priest or priests the Pope has specially chosen in the past to do so (because the sin is considered to cause excommunication automatically, and excommunication can only be lifted by the Pope or a priest of his choosing)

For the Jubilee year Francis has “chosen” all priests to perform this act so once it takes effect (Dec 8 2015) all priests will be able to forgive the sin of abortion. (Note, for a while now, all priests in the U.S. have been able to do so due to a special dispensation; as of 12/8, all priests around the world will be able to do so)

I agree with you. I pray the Pope’s intentions are as you describe. However, I would have no doubts if John Paul or Benedict had come out with this.

Yeah you are better off going to Fr. Z’s site or something instead of getting it from the mainstream press.

http://wdtprs.com/blog/2015/09/pope-francis-for-year-of-mercy-grants-that-sspx-priests-can-validly-absolve/

The issue is lifting the excommunication rather than just giving absolution.

I’m trying to piece it all together as well, but apparently priests in the U.S. have had the ability to lift excommunications from abortions for a while, so it doesn’t seem like much change in this country.

"And what penance do they prescribe for people to make right what they have done?"

I must ask.. do you beleive we can earn God's grace? When did Christ say you will find forgiveness through any action of your own... In reading the Bible it is clear, you call with a repentent heart for the father to forgive you through the justification of the Son's actions.... not our own... We do not earn favor... it s a gift, so we may not boast in ourselves....

Oh my that is distressing. Thank you for posting it. I’m a Catholic but I love the truth more than any beurocracy. The Vatican as a city-state, when acting politically, is a beurocracy as much as any other. Please join me in prayer that the Vatican does not sign on to that mandate as reported.

Thank you again for posting that. It is an important issue.

Ephesians 2: 5-9

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. (KJB)

Douay-Rheims Bible: But God, (who is rich in mercy,) for his exceeding charity wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together in Christ, (by whose grace you are saved,) And hath raised us up together, and hath made us sit together in the heavenly places, through Christ Jesus. That he might shew in the ages to come the abundant riches of his grace, in his bounty towards us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, for it is the gift of God; Not of works, that no man may glory.

When you in your self pride believe you can strive to obtain salvation by paying for your sins, you insult the riches of Hid Glory, for salvation, being cleansed from all sin before the law of sin and death which is covered by His precious blood IN HEAVEN, is the glory of God manifest. Your working to pay is as filthy rags before His Grace in Christ Jesus. Sorry, you will not change God's declaration to suit your Catholic mindset.

It’s always been about man, not God.
This pope proves it beyond a shadow
of a doubt.

It is confusing. I never heard that there were “special” priests who could offer forgiveness to someone who has had an abortion.

I thought a murderer who confesses to a priest is forgiven first then he must turn himself in. If he doesn’t, he’s just doubled his sin. There’s a Hitchcock movie about this.

Hebrews 4:12-16

12For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. 14Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Does the catholic church note read to you the Book of Hebrews? ... Since so many Bibles are available, you could try reading yourself. God has PROMISED to open the meaning to you as you read His Word to you with a contrite spirit. But a spirit of pride will shut the gates of Grace quicker than any candle can be snuffed.

COME ON DOWN! The Catholic church is running a special on the forgiveness of sin during the next Holy year! Abortion? That’s right! YOU can receive forgiveness only during the limited time of this special. Don’t let this opportunity slip away!

BUT that’s not all! If you act during this holy year we’ll through in a free pass for forgiveness of Lust and Greed as our special thanks to you for participating. So don’t delay, this is a limited offer.
