Korean-American groups demand Jeb Bush's apology for 'anchor baby' remark

Korean-American groups demanded Friday that Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush apologize for accusing Asian people of abusing the birthright citizenship law.

Bush made the accusation earlier this week in an apparent attempt to mollify Hispanic voters after coming under fire for using the term "anchor baby," which refers to children born in the U.S. to undocumented parents. The term is widely considered offensive by Hispanics.

Asked whether his use of the term would hurt his support among Hispanics, Bush said he was referring mostly to Asians.

On Friday, Korean-American organizations, including the Korean American Civic Empowerment, held a joint press conference in New York and demanded Bush offer an official apology for the "divisive" remark.

The remark raises questions about Bush's qualifications as a leader, they said, adding that it would be a misfortune for a candidate who openly makes remarks belittling Asian Americans to become president.

Yonhap News Agency is South Korea's largest news agency.
I guess the US media is too busy attacking Trump to report this story.

I’ve read articles on the Chinese doing this, so I found it interesting that Bush said Asians.

Now that the Korans are calling him on it, I think it’s a hoot.

He was trying to use this issue to take Trump down, and it backfired.

Bush is truly Wiley Coyote, and he’s even funnier...

They’re just democrats that pretend to represent Korean Americans. This allow them to feign outrage and attack others without being labeled partisan hacks

They have the same old face saving crap that the rest of the Asians seem to have.

I am NO fan of Jeb’s, but he should definitely NOT apologize. Asians vote for the dems in huge numbers so let them go off and be offended. Enough with the apologies and begging forgiveness of people who are of no help to the cause in the first place, it’s part of what’s gotten us into the mess we are in now.

The first time I ever heard "birth tourism" was many years ago. Apparently well connect Koreans were using it to avoid the mandatory military requirements. There are some interesting cases were Koreans born in America were forced to serve in the ROK army. See link

More broadly, "the problem is not unique to Korea," she said. "It happens in places like Israel. Men traveling to countries (with compulsory military service) have to be careful.
