Jeb: Hey let’s do “free tuition” and pay back students who don’t graduate in four years

Jeb Bush has a fantastically awful idea when it comes to college education. He thinks community college students should get “free” tuition for two years. If that’s sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the exact same thing President Barack Obama proposed in January. Which shows how completely hypocritical Bush is because he came out against Obama’s plan in January. Oh, but Bush’s plan gets even more #headdesk inducing. He wants universities to PAY BACK students who don’t graduate in four years.

If kids can’t graduate with a four-year degree in four years, there ought to be some payback to their families or to them, or their got to be some support for the loans they’ve taken out.

This is so fiscally irresponsible and reprehensible, it’s not even funny. For one, it would cause major federal budget issues because the government has increasingly gotten involved in higher education over the last 50 years. Cato Institute wrote in 2009 how higher education federal spending hit $36.6B, not counting the $31.4B in research grants. College Raptor’s guide to financial aid shows the federal government covers 58% of student aid nationwide. This includes up to $5500 in Perkins Loans and up to $12,500 in Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans for undergrad students. This doesn’t count the Pell Grants or Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants available either. So it’s possible, Bush’s plan could end up making the federal government pay TWICE in both loans and the payback, because the universities sure aren’t going to use athletics fees to pay students back.

Thank you for referencing that article hcmama. Please bear in mind that the following critique is directed at the article and not at you.

Jeb’s vote-winning idea for schools to pay students who don’t graduate in four years aside, please consider the following. Since Jeb has now flip-flopped his stance on education and agrees with Obama on that issue, both Jeb and Obama actually share Thomas Jefferson’s vision about “free” education, but with one major exception.

More specifically, since the states have never amended the Constitution to give the feds the specific power tax and spend for intrastate educational purposes, nether Obama or Jeb should be making statements concerning federal funding for such purposes without also talking about a new amendment to the Constitution for that purpose.

“The great mass of the articles on which impost is paid is foreign luxuries, purchased by those only who are rich enough to afford themselves the use of them. Their patriotism would certainly prefer its continuance and application to the great purposes of the public education, roads, rivers, canals, and such other objects of public improvement as it may be thought proper to add to the constitutional enumeration of federal powers [emphasis added].” —Thomas Jefferson: 6th Annual Message, 1806.

I'm actually once of the few conservative humanities professors teaching in college. Ugh, the stories I could tell you! But let's be clear on this - there is already to friggin many kids in school that should not be there. They have already turned college into high school by making it defacto socially expectected. Faculty are caught between a reality of flunking more and more students and an administration that is demanding “success” because of growing government oversight. This will not end well. The housing bust will look mild compared to the implosion when debt ridden students realize their degrees are meaningless and the Feds are busting their butts for student loan payments into perpetuity. But wow, oh wow...do I have a nice facility to teach in and a country club of faculty elite. Jeb. Is. An. Idiot.

At my daughter’s college graduation, the president read off the number of students each who graduated in 6, 5, and 4 years. The 4 year graduates were a small percentage. There are many reasons to take 5 or 6 years to graduate, none of which are the fault of the colleges.

I went to Junior College out of High School.

It was free. No tuition, had to buy books.

Why did we go so downhill that it ever had to cost?

My take is different, although there is a rich/poor giveaway slant to the proposal. The thing I'd focus on is Jeb's "new" idea that if someone doesn't graduate in four years, it's the college's fault. I think Jeb got his inspiration for this from recent medical initiatives under Obama to introduce "outcomes based payments." So much for a bypass, so much for treatment of a particular type of disease. The hospital gets to allocate the total, giving it an incentive to cut corners (not that the current situation doesn't encourage piling on of costs).

So, here, it is the college's job to get someone a degree in four years. What will happen? A whole new class of slacker, ignorant students will get meaningless four year degrees so the colleges won't have to pay penalties.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

What a crazy idea. It would make a college degree worthless, because there would be an incentive to pass all the students ( regardless of merit), because otherwise the colleges would have to give all the money back.

An economist (an actual one) tried explaining that to Jeb, but this was his response:

I actually found one on here who said he would be a wonderful president and she would vote for him twice if possible.

I never met one of those before.

He wants universities to PAY BACK students who don’t graduate in four years.

Just wait until he finds a way to make this case for the dream undoc illegals. They could take some college level indoct classes, under the guise of becoming assimilated -- and bailout in their last semester so we could pay for it all. Perhaps he should toss in a JEBphone to close the deal.

I wonder if the Koch brothers have asked for their money back yet. All those big donors have to be asking themselves “What the hell was I thinking? This guy is retarded.”

Out of touch, lib sympathizer. No idea of how to pay for this. Guess he will just print money like his brother did.

America knows better than giving away Obamaphones or Bushcollege freebies.

Florida: what in the world did this guy ever do to get elected there?

“At this rate he is more likely to split the Democrat vote.”

No, he can pull a ‘Crist’ and go for the Democrat nominee with Hillary in prison. Dems know Biden is a loser, but they will sure like hearing in Spanish Bush mouthing idiocy.
