Critics Miss How Well Trump's Deportation Plan Actually Could Work
American Thinker ^ | Thomas Lifson

Donald Trump has laid out the bare bones of a deportation plan that has an excellent chance of working well. The caricatures presented by his critics overlook the clever incentives he apparently is building into it. The reaction has been as negative as the reaction to his initial contention, when he announced his candidacy, that rapists and criminals are streaming across the border. That was twisted into a false claim that he was thus characterizing all people coming across the border, earning him accusations of racism and worse. Yet the string of disgusting crimes at the hands of illegals, who would have been deported but for sanctuary city policies, has made his point, and the surge in his popularity has shown that demonization by media and political elites has backfired.

Something quite similar may well happen with his deportation proposal.

Estimates have already been published that the cost of his proposal would be from 100 billion to close to a trillion dollars, and claims made that a police state would result. These contentions rest on the assumption that what Trump has in mind is a mass roundup of the 11 to 14 million illegal immigrants in the country. But listen closely to what he said in his interview with Bill O’Reilly August 18th (between roughly 2:50 and 3:20 on this video):

The plan of deporting illegals seems to work well for Mexico. Wonder how they avoid being called racists?

Make it a felony to hire, aid, or abet and illegal alien, or to provide health care, education, welfare, or any other assistance, and they will deport themselves.

Good article by Thomas Lifson. He presents an interpretation of Trump’s intent and calls out some propagandists. Thanks for posting.

Let’s do all of the things you mentioned. Plus...

Put a bounty on their heads and give the cops bonuses for every catch and deport.

I wonder how many would self deport between Election Day and January 20, 2017?

Also, rather than going directly after Mexicans to deport them, focus should be directed towards those who hire and house them. Massive fines and forfeiture of property.

Of course, it’ll work.

It’s astounding how right Donald has been on just about every issue he tackles.

Pure BS propaganda

The IRS gets over 100,000,000 individual tax returns every year. They do not, can not audit everyone. They do audit a few, hammer them with fines and or imprisonment. Then the word gets out and all tax payers either live in fear or just follow the rules. Sucks but it works.

This is how immigration laws work also. You incarcerate and harass, try and convict a million or so, the other 10+ million get the message and leave on their own accord.

The only reason they say it won't work is because Trump is doing it...to these negative people, if someone else says it, it will work...Trump comes out with things, it won't work...

Doesn't bother those of us that are supporting Trump, we just look at the ones that aren't and shake our heads....

That is a mix of vacuous misconception and some really good common sense. The good part is that stopping the hand outs will lead to rapid and efficient and non disruptive self deportation - and in a few years the entire situation will be much smaller. Making it a felony to hire runs afoul of several things, including A: blaming business for a government caused problem is obscene and B: assuming that it's easy or even possible to know who's legal and who's not is just totally wrong and an opinion only held by those who have never hired labor in their entire life and C: being an illegal alien is not a felony - WTF would you make it more devastating to commit a lesser offense and D: be careful what kind of big government raiding of businesses and homes you support - you and your situation may be next. E: do you want to pick the vegetables or make the beds at Motel 6? Or maybe you want to mow the grass or mop the floors. You let me know which you and your buddies want to do.

No matter what anyone says, the majority of Mexican people (legals and illegals) are good, hard working people who come here to do just that, WORK. They work at numerous jobs that Americans won’t do, thereby earning money which in turn, they send home to the families still IN Mexico.

IMO, you can stop the illegals from coming here in droves by stopping to outflow of the money they earn here and send back to Mexico. That in itself would reduce the number of illegals where come here. Over half of Mexico’s economy comes from the American dollar.

Follow the money trail.

Similar to Romney’s plan which he REFUSED TO DEFEND.

Gee, is there a pattern developing here?

Trump may only be 60% Conservative, but he’s willing to fight like hell for that 60%. That’s a better deal than we’re likely to get from anyone else.

I did notice that there is nothing in Trump's plan that cracks down on the companies that break the law by hiring the illegals. Any plan should include an immediate and severe crackdown on them, with heavy fines and actual jail time being the minimum penalty.

There is a huge cost to rounding up all the illegal aliens, and then processing them, and deporting them.

But, the total cost would be a tiny fraction of how much they cost the country in stolen jobs and medical services and education and food stamps and welfare and housing and police and justice system costs. Not to mention the damage they cause to the political system, where illegal voters determine the outcome of elections.
