Meet the science teacher who lost 60 pounds eating nothing but McDonald's three meals a day

Iowa high school science teacher John Cisna weighed 280 pounds and wore a size 51 pants.

Then he started eating at McDonalds.

Every meal. Every day. For 180 days.

By the end of his experiment, Cisna was down to a relatively svelte 220 and could slip into a size 36.

Cisna, who is Birmingham today and Wednesday to speak at a rally for area McDonald's managers, earned a new nickname, too.

"In all those (previous) years, my nickname with my buddies was 'Snack Bar,''' Cisna said. "You know what they call me now? 'Snack Bar Jr.'"

What turned out to be a life-changing experience for the now-56-year-old Cisna began in January 2014 as a classroom experiment for three students in Cisna's sophomore science class at Colo-Nesco High School in tiny Colo, Iowa.

"Because three of the kids were going on to college in the medical field, I had an idea, 'Hey, how would you like to prove or disprove this hypothesis: Is it possible for a person to become better off eating nothing but McDonald's for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 90 days?'," Cisna said in an interview with AL.com today. "That's how it got started."

I am not sure I could handle McDonald's every meal 3 times per day for 180 days but good for this guy. He found something that worked for him.

< 2000 calories per day and walking 45 minutes a day four to five days a week .....

“eating nothing but McDonald’s for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 90 days”

Limiting himself to three meals a day is most likely what helped him. It’s the constant eating that can pack on the pounds.

If he can fit into 36” pants at 220 lbs, he must be a tall guy.

It’s impressive he lost that much from just eating at McDonalds. I watched the video and can tell that he was a good teacher. I am sure the students learned a lot from his classes. They learned how to think.

This just shows how mental that leftist film maker was when he ate at McDonald’s and gained weight. See “Supersize Me”.

The “Supersize Me” guy was agenda driven. He just wanted to cash in.

This guy talks about him in the article too.

“If he can fit into 36” pants at 220 lbs, he must be a tall guy.”

He would have to be at least 6’ 8” tall.

I’m 6’ and weigh 176 and have a hard time getting into my size 36” pants. And those pants also have an elastic waist band.

Not necessarily.

I have had a weight problem my whole life. My best weight ever was 205 lbs at 6’ and 22 years old.

I got to there at 1000-1200 calories a day, and 10 grams of fat. I was also, and have always been active, until my back crapped out.

I looked good but was still a big guy, and I was miserable.

As the years have gone by I have gained weight, but it’s not been from over eating. I seldom eat more than one meal a day, and it’s normal portioning.

I do not snack all day, and do not binge eat, but I never drop away from the 250-270 level.

Obesity is not an easy fix, and is not always about the persons habits.

I agree it’s impressive. I have a few relatives/in laws who are quite heavy. One is even a high school science teacher. The biggest behavior I see that led to them gain weight (they were slim when younger) is constantly eating-especially at night.

My thyroid is over active, so prior to knowing about it,I ate throughout the day and maintained a normal weight. I fell and got a concussion this winter and was off my feet for about a week. During that time I could eat only when my family brought me food. I didn’t want to ask for it constantly so I ended up eating three big meals a day rather than snacking. I lost a pound a day. The only difference was how often I was eating.

Breaking the habit now that I’m on anti-thyroid meds is tough. Haven’t done it yet and I’ve put on a few pounds.

I’m 6’3” and weight 230. I might get into a size 40” with an elastic band. That’s why I’m having a hard time believing this 220-pounder can fit into size 36.

Not necessarily. When I get my weight down that far, I can get into a size 36, and I'm 6' even. Right now, I'm punching about 40 pounds above my fighting weight. LOL But I've dropped close to 30 since the beginning of the year. My doc is giving me good drugs for a change.

Calling BS on the 36” waist at 220 lbs, 38” maybe.

I know.

Watch the documentary “Fat Head”. Tom Naughton makes a funny rebuttal to Spurlock’s tripe. They forced me to watch Supersize Me in 9th grade and I didn’t buy it.

I am 6’3” and weigh 265 and fit into size 38 clothes every day. Depends on whether it is fat or muscle.

Sure, i’ll buy that, but we’re not talking about a guy who goes to the gym on a daily basis.

You may be interested in reading “The Fat Switch”. One of our children has weight troubles, even though she is very active. Weight gain/loss is tied to our body’s ability to read the hormone leptin. Loosely following what the book recommends caused our daughter’s “fat switch” to turn off and she slimmed down quite a bit.

FWIW, the time in my life when I struggled with weight was when I thought low fat/diet foods would keep me slim. Had the opposite effect. Started eating real food, including full fat dairy, and I easily slimmed down to normal. We’ve been fed lies about what constitutes a healthy diet.
