Through all the hysteria over this, we still don’t have a clear account.
It seems at least plausible that the hunter (which Zimbabwe actively invites) got some charlatan guides who coaxed Cecil the Pussy Cat off the preserve to be the sacrificial lion. And the guides have more explaining to do than the hunter does. Either a desperation move or a cheap move... it would take longer to locate a lion who wasn’t already a local pet.
I just don’t feel sorry for someone who travels thousands of miles to pay $50,000 so he can shoot an African lion. A deer just isn’t good enough. Glutton.

Trophy hunting manages the animals humanely, gives the locals reason to protect a resource that puts food on their tables and money in their pockets. It also pays for resources to stop poachers.

I keep reading all these post that compare killing a lion to killing babies. You people realize that those are two completely different issues.... right? I can absolutely guarantee that very few people in Africa give two cares about our politics and Planned Parenthood.
In other words, both can be disgusting. Both can be rich, snotty, people who absolutely know what they are doing is wrong but feel above the law.
But both are absolutely different. Not related. Not in any way shape or form.

Trophy hunting or extermination through poaching are in fact the only two choices available.
Government general fund money for national parks/ conservation is nonexistent. They can't even feed their people without foreign aid (since they trashed the farm infrastructure).
Without the income from wealthy hunters, there will be no game wardens and no preserve management. Nor will there be any fund to pay crop damage claims from local villagers. No wardens and no preserve management means that the poachers will clean all the valuable animals out. No crop damage payments means that the local villagers will clean out everything that is left in order to eat.
This actually happened about 40 years ago in Kenya, when well-meaning idiots banned big game hunting. Their big game animal population crashed, to the point that they had to import replacements at tremendous expense. Kenya had some rudiments of an economy so they managed to find the money. Zimbabwe has NO money. So we know what will happen.
