Immigration Bill: Landlords 'must evict' illegal immigrants
BBC News ^ | August 3, 2015

Landlords will be expected to evict tenants who lose the right to live in England under new measures to clamp down on illegal immigration.

They will be able to end tenancies, sometimes without a court order, when asylum requests fail, ministers say.

Landlords will also be required to check a migrant's status in advance of agreeing a lease. Repeat offenders could face up to five years in prison.

Financial support for failed asylum seekers will also end under the plans.

Some 10,000 currently continue to receive a taxpayer-funded allowance of £36 a week, despite their applications having been rejected, because they are living in the UK with their families.

Communities Secretary Greg Clark said the government would crack down on "rogue landlords who make money out of illegal immigration

Okay, try evicting a complex full of bearded dark skinned men on a property in an area that even the unarmed police don’t go. Good luck with that.

Either play the game for real. Or stop making bad plays.

I see your point. It’s like they’re putting enforcement on the landlord’s back. Maybe if the UK stopped letting so many immigrants into the country in the first place, landlords wouldn’t have to worry about evicting illegals.

American media expected that to be left lost down the memory hole they shoved it.

Right. As a landlord myself, it’s not my job to determine the validity of a tenant’s residence nor for that matter, the attraction he/she/it may have for whatever unless it disrupts the neighborhood or damages the property.

Is the UK waking up or are they shifting the burden onto the landlords?

AND ... as a landlord ... you're not allowed to ask anything about a persons sex, gender, religion, political affiliation etc., so how can you KNOW who that person is?

And if you SHOULD ask, and you're taken to court, you'll lose it all and no longer BE the landlord.

I’m a landlord.... but don’t feel sorry for people who own rental property in areas where even the cops won’t go. I don’t feel sorry for persons who rent to illegal aliens. I mean, how stupid is that?

Its not your job... but it would be a pretty smart thing to do since its your investment they're going to be living in..... What are you thinking?

I am a LL also. There is a town in Nebraska I think that passed a similar ordinance. I have mixed thoughts on it.

Interesting that after years of “Open Borders” philosophy in Europe, things are changing fast. Getting way tougher than we are.

Finally a common sense law on illegal immigration. Unfortunately it’s in Britain and not here in the USA.

It's a mobius loop of law(s) .... the ones they like they enforce, the ones they don't, they don't

I can see where THIS type of logic would allow descrimination against queers .... but we couldn't have THAT now, could we ?

We only own properties in generally nice areas and have rules about how many adults can live there. All are vetted and have to provide employment, SS#, etc. Mr. M personally picks up the rent checks every month and has a one on one relationship with the tenants. As a result, in 40 years of owning and renting multiple properties, we have only had three law suits and have prevailed on all three. We rarely have a vacant property and although once in a while a tenant will miss paying rent, he/she gets caught up because Mr. M works with them over time. He’s the best LL in the world. His tenants love him. My favorite story is the one eviction we had to file where the tenant owed $1500.00. He couldn’t pay. We hated to force him out. He was a disabled father with wife and three kids. We ended up agreeing to a judgment against him for the full amount, and gave him $500 to find another place. He promised to pay us the full money back when he got his lump sum disability. I knew we couldn’t collect on his disability so I assumed we would never see it. A year later we got a check for $2000.00.

Right. But this story is from the UK.

Big difference.

I’m sure there is a difference. I probably don’t understand what it is though. If our government passes similar legislation, it will not effect my rental business. It would have zero impact on it.
