Days before the first Republican debate, Donald Trump has surged into the national lead in the GOP primary race, with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush following, a new NBC News/ Wall Street Journal poll shows.

Trump is the first choice of 19 percent of GOP primary voters, while 15 percent back Walker and 14 percent back Bush. Ten percent support retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

All other Republican candidates earn single digit backing. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is favored by nine percent of primary voters; former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul are tied with six percent support; Florida Sen. Marco Rubio clocks in at five percent; and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Ohio Gov. John Kasich are tied with three percent apiece.

Tea Party supporters most favor Ted Cruz (22 percent), with Trump (20 percent) and Walker (20 percent) close behind.

The NBC News/ Wall Street Journal poll was conducted July 26-30, 2015. The margin of error for 252 interviews among Republican Primary Voters is ±6.17%

If they want a debate among the top five, I could live with that...

Trump
Walker
Bush
Carson
Cruz

Imagine this against a Democrat slate of tired old White socialists (Clinton, Sanders, O’Malley, Biden...) and tell me which party represents diversity.

If they leave out Carly they will be making a big mistake. Put her in and lets she what she can do.

They can drop Huckabee, Carson or Christie for sure.

The other world leaders are getting to be hard core. The only US candidate so far to show he has the “Blow It Out Your Rear Attitude” is Trump. Cruz, Walker, Jindal and even Perry talk tough but just don't have the look when they say it. That is a big part in negotiating. Regan had that quality. The only question is, is Trump portraying the conservative he claims to be.

Many are upset about Trumps rise and popularity because he “isn’t a real conservative”, but he keeps pulling all the right strings and amassing all the right enemies. Some folks are in need of surgery to get their panties unwedged....

Almost as amazing as Trump at 19 is Carson at 10. Two polical newcomers. Add Carly to the mix and a third of the voters are rejecting the entire political class...including a lot of very successful tea party champions. It says a lot.

I go out of my way to avoid Fox News. In fact, don’t even get it anymore. Don’t miss seeing any of their faces.

Carson voters would most likely go to Trump.

I doubt that, as the two are polar opposites in temperament. Hence I'd expect them to be more likely to go to Walker or Cruz. These probably represent voters on the conservative range between Walker and Cruz, who would rather see either an outsider and/or a minority on the GOP ticket (yes, technically, Cruz is a minority, but as a conservative, you need to be much more identifiable as one, otherwise you really don't get to play that card).

Oh how we wish. Come on Carly!

Right side (stage left) is not of equal quality as other side. A very lopsided stage of personalities

After opening statements (1.5 to 2 minutes each) and adding in closing statements (1 to 2 minutes each) and adding in the lengthy editorialized moderator questions (20 seconds), each candidate will be lucky to get a total of 3 minutes response time.

Ten is just too many for the debate to have any meaning.

The kiddy-table debate may turn out somewhat better, since it only has 7 participants.

What is exciting is that that younger people are listening to Trump saying we can get things turned around and to speak up about your frustrations and dreams, have a plan and succeed with it. Just as he has for his whole life.

I had not considered that aspect. Chances are a lot of younger people have never heard of the rest of the GOP field (and probably Hillary for that matter) and would pay them no notice. But they know Donald Trump because of television and pop culture...so they are more likely to pay attention.

For once the GOP may have an advantage with the younger demographic! And as usual the tired, loser establishment GOP fights it.

HA! HA! Dream on. Trump is leading Jebbie and Marco in Florida. You need to get ready to face reality. It bites. LOL!
