Do they have dentists over there? They might let him set up a practice so they can confiscate it.

More likely it’s their way of remembering their trip, the Alaska bush, the Yukon tundra, the African veldt.

Sorta like people have pictures on their wall of scuba diving trips, or cruises, to remember their vacations.

Zim is a hellhole, and the really sad point is, if Zim had voted in the Reverend Sithole as their leader, Zimbabwe might have prospered, but it didn’t happen.

Just like if Kerensky hadn’t been overthrown, how much would Russia have been different than under Lenin, then Stalin?

Burying the collar, is what I should have said. The carcass and collar were buried. In Colorado, I have been told and have read that we must turn radio collars over to the DoW, and that in certain study areas, you can’t hunt tagged animals. I have family members who have worked with the DoW, including helping with collaring interstate big game transfers. I will see if I can get more information and will let you know.

As for burying the carcass, it is illegal everywhere I have hunted to leave anything more than the gut pile, including head, hide, and legs below the knee. I can only find sites with individual states (no central list of laws). Alaska seems to be close to average:
http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=hunting.meatcare

According to this, baiting is illegal in many states, and severely limited in others. Limits include volume of bait (two gallons seems to be common), no baiting 10 days prior to a hunt, no baiting certain types of animals (big game), and baiting only on private land. No where does dragging one animal behind a vehicle through a government preserve look to be legal, which is what they did to lure the lion away.
http://lucky-buck.com/state-regulation-list-baiting-feeding

As to legal minimum firepower, most states do have regulations:
https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20121108160916AA3j6Eb

More detailed information by state. Only a few don’t have minimums:http://www.thefirearmsforum.com/threads/minimum-legal-calibers-for-big-game-hunting.130541/

Minimum draw weights for big game ranges between 35-50 pounds in the United States. I saw one report that said he was around 100 yards. The maximum (not 100% sure on how it is codified) is 50-65 yards. http://www.fieldandstream.com/forums/hunting/big-game/recommended-minimum-bow-draw-weight-elk

Finally, I would say this: there is legal, and there is ethical. I may be wrong about the legal requirement of turning over the collar, but burying it is at minimum bad practice with even worse optics.

I am not going to argue for someone who has a prior conviction for poaching.

I am not going to support someone who unethically kills the lynchpin of a pride of lions, endangering the cubs during cub season. One of my proudest moments as a hunter was seeing another hunter turn his back on shooting a mountain goat with her late-season baby. It would have been legal, but was not ethical to consign the baby to starvation. I knew that he knew that he might never get another goat tag, but his ethics were more important.

I enjoy your pro-gun articles, and know that you know that hunting, which is highly regulated, is not the purpose of the Second Amendment. There is no absolute right to hunt.

What this man did was highly unethical, and his Safari Club membership has been suspended. They understand that defending him is the wrong thing to do. I dread seeing the possibility of federal legislation coming from this. I really do. I don’t want to see a federal ban on lead, which many anti-hunting nuts want.

http://www.foxnews.com/science/2015/07/30/walter-palmer-safari-club-membership-suspended-after-lion-killing/

The concern over killing this lion has been likened to the fact that many are unconcerned about abortion. As a pro-life worker, and hunter, I know that you can be concerned about both abortion (the worst scourge of our time) and poaching.

Both may be legal. Neither is right. While they don’t compare with regard to depravity, both rely on changing hearts.

I want to add that, aided by Reuters, the federal hunting law making frenzy has begun.

Burying the carcass would likely have been illegal in the U.S., but that is not what you said, it is not the same as burying the collar, and not turning the collar over is certainly not illegal in many areas. Turning the collar over to research project is considered a courtesy in Zimbabwe, but I have not read that it is illegal.

I have not seen any evidence that a bait was dragged through the preserve/reserve. Yes, that would be illegal, I have not seen any evidence that it was done.

Numerous collard lions have been shot outside the reserve in Zimbabwe legally.

Yes, a lot of states have legal minimums on firepower. You do not show that the Dentist violated any.

I have read that mature male lions at the end of their life cycle are some of the least biologically valuable members of a pride.

You made a good point about burying, but this is the first that I have heard that the carcass was buried.

Here is a link to a source from inside of Zimbabwe on the legalities involved:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/3318629/posts

Here is some of what they say:

1.there is no law gazetted in Zimbabwe that specifically forbids the shooting of collard animals. It’s the unwritten rule amongst “professional hunters” should the collar be visible that these animals are off limits.

2.of the 65 or so lions that have been collard in matabeleland north ( hwange, gwaai,Victoria falls, etc) in the past decade or so, 35 have died, with 24 of these being shot by either sport hunters, on problem animal control - cattle killers, man eaters etc . In the event one is killed, it’s professional to return the collard to the research organization with date, location etc the animal was killed etc

3.the professional hunter/land owner did themselves no favors by trying to destroy the lions collar. No lion tag/quota , there was mention of “quota transfer “.. This is absolutely diabolical , but unfortunately is has and still happens. That’s a lengthy topic which we will go in depth about in a separate post.

4. Did the client actually know the operator / land owner had no lion on quota? We very much doubt it.

I’m in West Texas now and have been for many year’s but about a rural as you can get. The ranch is a total of 42 square miles, my driveway from the front gate is just under 5 miles long.

We have hunted in Mexico many times, with our own guns. You have to get permission from the head military person of the state you will be hunting in. You have to have papers signed by US officials that you do not have a criminal record.

Wow!!

I’ve heard of ranches that big but have never actually known someone who lives on one!

Amazing...what is it like to be able to look everywhere and know that it’s all yours? No neighbors, just land, spreadin’ out so far an’ wide?

So neat, I’m happy for you! The American dream!

Do you raise cattle?

See ya’, thanks.

I don’t like radical greens or PETA, but the killing of this lion was a cowardly act. The dentist gets no sympathy from me.

Guy’s a jerk. I have a blanket no extradition of US citizens to third world crapholes policy though.

The Mugabe government is complicit in poaching.

I agree, 100%!

I don’t hunt; I do feel bad for animals like deer and elk. And the seals that get clubbed in Canada. I admit it, I do. I don’t really eat meat because I feel bad for the cattle. What did a deer or cow or seal ever do to anyone?

I wouldn’t protest anyone hunting; if it floats their boat, that’s their thing.

But this lion situation is complete bulls**t.

There are some people I’d like to hunt. The most dangerous game.

Except they wouldn’t be dangerous cause they’d be dressed in rags with no shoes and I’d have an assault rifle.

But an animal? I’m not interested.

If someone wants to shoot a deer and eat it, ok.

Shoot a lion for fun and take a picture smiling over it’s corpse like a little kid proud of the big dukey he just made? Sounds like a loser move to me.

Deer look pretty but where I live in Maryland they are all over the place thanks to development. At night they are all over my lawn, especially in the winter running from lawn to lawn and down the street looking for food..

They are a nuisance and a hazard here.
Lyme disease, running out in front of cars and destroying foliage.

I was lucky having two near misses driving around them, luckily they stood still.

In the fall this county allows controlled deer hunts on county lands and certain weekdays including behind my back yard.

Where they need to be thinned out, 100%, hunt them. No problem with that at all. But unless I was in survival mode, I personally wouldn’t kill a deer.

As far as car accidents go, I was nearly killed by two illegal aliens two years ago.

Who would I rather see dead, those two or a deer?

Deer's are not humans. We are NOT going to issue hunting licenses to hunt and kill illegals. Not even Trump would suggest that.

The Lyme disease that deers carry with deer ticks is nasty, I know a few people who got it.

One was close to paralyzed and in constant pain and doctor after doctor missed the cause, it reached his spinal cord.

The other got arthritis before he was 40 yrs old.

They are dangerous and a nuisance,.
