First, I agree with the author as to 2008 causes.
But Trump may be being very clever here. Whatever you want to say about 2008, it is “ancient history”. Will we make the same mistake(s) again? Probably, in slightly different guise. but my point is that it’s gone, it’s “done”. Dodd-Frank, which came out of it, is stupid, destructive law, but it is nevertheless the law. So, pointing fingers over 2008, a topic that very very few people understand or even have the capability of understanding....is a no win. The lesson from sales is: It simply connects people to their pain, and if he ragged on it, it would come out of Trump’s mouth. This you do not want to do.
Trump’s BIG issue is immigration, and that is now and for the future. In immigration, black-letter law is being disregarded. That’s “fatal”.
If Trump has really had a conservative conversion (I do not know, I don’t think anyone can know) and wishes to mouth off about every aspect and topic he thinks are Dems fault(s) he could alienate a lot of people and maybe he is trying to sidle up to disaffected Dems by no discomforting them about everything they ever believed in.
ASD: I respect your opinion, but totally disagree for this reason: we have NEVER gotten indies and Dems to vote for us when we pretend to agree with them, thus is it foolish and destructive, not clever, to agree with leftist talking points on the crash of 2008.
We only get those folks when we convince them to join us, not when we join them. History is clear. And FTR, I don’t think Trump even understands this. Personal wealth and macro economics are NOT THE SAME thing.
The cause of the 2008 crisis was the stupid trade policies that had been placed in effect for decades and weakened the economy, combined with an oil price shock the likes of which we hadn't had since the 1970's.
Every economic downturn looks like a real estate bubble and a mortgage criss. The reason is that when people lose jobs they stop making the mortgage payment. They could afford the mortgage when they had jobs. Mortgages are a symptom not a cause.
Trump gets that stupid trade policies are causing the de-industrialization of America and our high unemployment. Illegal immigration hasn't helped either, but Trade policy is the primary cause. Listen to Trumps Phoenix speech. He lays out several examples of our trading partners not treating us fairly. And in each case, he has a solution. A solution that might not even need to be implemented. It just needs somebody credible to threaten to implement his solution and we will get treated fairly.
But only Trump understands this, no other candidate does. If Cruz understood it, he wouldn't have been trying to give Obama fast track trade authority for even more job killing free trade aggreements, and he wouldn't have killed the Export-Import bank.

I do not agree every bit of it was pushed by the Democrats. But CERTAINLY the Democrats were at least as responsible, if not principally so. It was 40 years in the making.
That said, the last 6-8 years of the bubble were on the watch of the Bush admin with a Republican House and a Republican Senate for the first 6 years.
The Comptroller of the Currency, Treasury, every Fed Bank President and the Fed Chairman were first nominated by Bush and then confirmed by the Republican Senate.
To believe these guys didn't know what was happening and didn't have the power to stop it is ludicrous.

I was in the mortgage business for years. Back in Ohio, around 1996, I remember cities in Ohio passing laws that stated that lenders were not allowed to charge prepayment penalties to high risk borrowers, and that ALL sources of income had to be counted toward qualification. This included unemployment benefits, food stamps, and welfare. I remember several lenders getting sued in the Cleveland market for refusing to comply with this. They were sued by this little organization named ACORN. Lead counsel for ACORN in many of these suits was some guy named....you guessed it, Barack Hussein Obama. As it turns out, some years later this fella went on to sue those same lenders who were forced to make those loans for “predatory lending”. And, a new bureaucracy was formed under his direction (the CFPB) that made a bunch of rules governing how lenders were supposed to lend their money using the newly minted Qualified Mortgage rule.
Talk about a racket...

I was in the mort business very briefly, right near the peak, and one day I attended a breakfast meeting for Countrywide, to roust the troops. I worked for a broker where we had maybe 80 different funding sources. I walked out of that meeting thinking I could qualify a goldfish for a home loan, I was actually dazed.
They had 4 or 5 programs. 1, was 20% down, they hated that one.
The next one was 5% down.
The next one was 2% down, do not state your income and no paycheck stubs.
The next one was 1% down, do not state your income and omit any paystub information, allow the agent to fill in your social security number.
The next one was “Call the regional manager and he will personally and manually approve your loan.

What is your objective in nominating a "conservative candidate for POTUS"?
Is it to gain a victory over the thoroughly revolting GOPe? Is it to elect a President? Is it both?
Why do you think conservatives could not elect a US Senator from Mississippi last November?
How many persons who voted for "Obama" do you need to vote for your guy on the general? How many persons who did not vote in 2008 or 2012 do you need to vote for your guy in the general?
Are either of these realistic?
How many Republicans who voted for McCain or Romney will not vote for a conservative? Have you factored those in?
I believe that 20% of the electorate that voted for "Obama" is up for grabs. I believe that 30% of voters who voted for McCain and Romney will not vote for a conservative.
If the border invasion is not stopped, the rest won't matter to our children.
You see where this is going.
I know five blue-collar Dems who already have their Trump signs out in the yard.
I really do think he may be the only one who can stop the invasion AND who could get elected.
