American Hunter Killed Cecil, Beloved Lion That Was Lured Out of Its Sanctuary
New York Times ^ | July 28, 2015 | By KATIE ROGERS

Cecil, a 13-year-old lion, wandered out of his sanctuary in a national park in Zimbabwe this month, following the scent of a potential snack.

At the other end of Cecil’s search was a lure, placed there by hunters who, conservationists say, wanted their prey to cross into unprotected territory so they could kill him.

Cecil, well known to those who visited the Hwange National Park in western Zimbabwe for his jet black mane, was beheaded, according to conservation officials. His corpse was left to rot in the sun.

Zimbabwean officials said that Dr. Walter J. Palmer, an American hunter known for killing big game with a bow and arrow, killed Cecil, and was being sought on poaching charges.

Johnny Rodrigues of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force said Cecil was lured out of a protected game preserve one night in early July by a hunting party that tied a dead animal to a car.

The first shot, which the authorities say came from Dr. Palmer’s crossbow, was not enough to kill the lion. Cecil was tracked for nearly two days before Dr. Palmer killed him with a gun. . .

Assholes like this dentist, note I did not say “hunter”, makes it bad for all legal hunters and hunting the world over. He should NEVER EVER be allowed to hunt again. The liberals are having a field day with this one.

I’m all for protecting your self and defending home and hearth but if the guy wants to be a real man send him hunting with a knife between his teeth.

Was that one collared? How obvious is it to scout the lion from a distance, undoubtedly using binocs, but then NOT see the collar. And these are professional scouts? What a friggin lie! I grew up hunting, and understand conservation. This is not conservation, but some emasculated jaggoff still trying to prove manhood.

If I was his one of his patients I would quit him. Does anyone know his political leanings? Is he a democrat or Republucan?

This story is getting WAY too much air time. Whether it was Cecil or Archibald or Buford, this guy was going to Africa to harvest a lion for his trophy room. What he did will be no different with us and the coming Obamao death camps.

Killing an animal for any purpose other than self defense or food is barbaric. It shows a disrespect for life that is no different than the abortionists who slaughter little children in the womb.

Yes this creep should be shamed. Not only did he kill the animal for no other purpose but to put a trophy on his wall, he left the carcass to rot in the sun.

I don’t see how anyone can defend this guy. He knew this lion was in a protected area and then lured the animal away for the sole purpose of killing it and decapitating it.

O.K. I’ll bite.

What does fishing have to do with killing a Lion?

Minnesota is a very leftist state, wondering the political viewpoint of the dentist.

This was not hunting, as many have said. Those “hunting” parks are where people go to kill an animal in a pen isn’t hunting either.

We’re talking about a man who spends his life dealing with bridge and gum work. Hardly a Masai.

Lots of touchy, feely leftist types on this thread that have absolutely NO IDEA how the big game hunting process works. There wouldn’t be a lion or elephant left on this planet if not for big game hunters willing to pay big bucks to harvest a trophy. The massive fees they pay to shoot old, non breeding animals is used to run the preserves. A lot of the comments on this thread sound like sniveling, bitter, envious old ladies! You people sound like damned Communist/Leftist/Democrats projecting YOUR biases onto others.

I’m not really sure why luring an animal is “hunting.” Sounds more like shooting in a barrel, but what do I know? Anyway, this animal was basically protected, collared, and should not have been lured away. But it is NOT tragic. What’s happening at PP is tragic and horrific.
