Cecil, a 13-year-old lion, wandered out of his sanctuary in a national park in Zimbabwe this month, following the scent of a potential snack.
At the other end of Cecil’s search was a lure, placed there by hunters who, conservationists say, wanted their prey to cross into unprotected territory so they could kill him.
Cecil, well known to those who visited the Hwange National Park in western Zimbabwe for his jet black mane, was beheaded, according to conservation officials. His corpse was left to rot in the sun.
Zimbabwean officials said that Dr. Walter J. Palmer, an American hunter known for killing big game with a bow and arrow, killed Cecil, and was being sought on poaching charges.
Johnny Rodrigues of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force said Cecil was lured out of a protected game preserve one night in early July by a hunting party that tied a dead animal to a car.
The first shot, which the authorities say came from Dr. Palmer’s crossbow, was not enough to kill the lion. Cecil was tracked for nearly two days before Dr. Palmer killed him with a gun. . .

I understand killing for food... it’s the right thing. But killing for sport I just don’t understand. :-/

As you might expect the animal rights idiots have harassed this guy, threatened his life, and have posted his business address in Minnesota causing him to close his dental practice temporarily from the harassment he has gotten. I don’t condone this guy for killing a lion, but the worldwide reaction to this is beyond ridiculous and it’s only because he’s an AMERICAN!!!! The world press relishes the chance to bash one of us on a worldwide scale.
Lions will play with their food but not for two days.

What I hate most is when people shoot an animal and leave the meat and hide and only collect something like ivory (e.g. elephants). If you use every bit of the animal, I am okay with hunting. If you’re being wasteful, it’s just messed up. That being said, I probably wouldn’t shoot an animal for any reason except to protect myself or to get food.

You were on the right side in Vietnam, South Vietnam would be as free and prosperous as South Korea today if we had not abandoned those poor souls to a terrible fate under the communists :-(
Controlling animal populations is a big reason.
Legal hunting in these game reserves helps raise revenue to keep the reserves operating and protected plus they help the local economy which also lessens illegal poaching.
That is how it is supposed to work, but idiots like this aren’t much better than the poachers it sounds like.
Apparently, it’s not the first time he’s gotten in trouble over a hunting issue. He was fined for illegally shooting a bear in Wisconsin a few years ago. Common sense and good judgement is apparently lacking in the good dentist. If he illegally killed the lion then he should be extradited back to Zimbabwe to face the legal system there and let them handle the issue, but of course the left (animal rights activists) has jumped all over the issue and won’t let it go. This guy’s professional a d personal life is f***ed for good.

I can understand controlling animal population, I just don’t understand how it is fun to kill something. I’d kill to feed my family but it would never be any fun.
