"He’s been called a clown, a fraud, a pretender, a joke—implicitly insulting his supporters, which currently happen to be a not insignificant segment of the GOP electorate. A segment that could abandon the Republicans for a third party if Trump is ticked off enough to fund an independent campaign."

And that in bold is precisely the authors purpose for this article. Subliminally coaxing conservatives it's alright to follow the Donald down the path to handing over the entire ball of wax to the Democrats.

That would be a sad possibility... a happier one might be that a charmed but now disaffected conservative body politic might notice that Cruz actually means most of what Trump was shouting about.

Don’t you get it??? WE DON’T CARE!!! DC is a sewer and Trump, as an outsider, is the best chance of cleaning it out. If that doesn’t happen, we’re goin’ down as a nation, so it might as well be with a dem at the helm.

“He’s been called a clown, a fraud, a pretender, a joke—implicitly insulting his supporters, ...”

There was nothing ‘implicit’ about McCain’t calling Trump’s AZ supporters “crazies.” That is pretty explicit.
